The "First Journalism Congress" was organized by the World Association of Journals (DERGİBİR) to address new developments and problems in the field of journalism.

The congress, which was organized in cooperation with the Presidency of Communications, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Istanbul University (IU), was held in the Istanbul Office of the Directorate of Communications.

Metin Erol, Istanbul Regional Director of the Directorate of Communications, stated at the opening of the congress that he started to engage in poetry and magazines during his high school years, and that he wrote articles for some magazines and that he cared about journalism, which he learned a lot about during this process.

Noting that as the Directorate of Communications, they have put forward the Turkey Communication Model vision within the framework of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's vision of the "Century of Turkey", Erol said:

“One of the most important pillars of our Turkey Communication Model vision is undoubtedly publishing activities. Here, as the Directorate of Communications, what we expect from all publishers and from all segments dealing with all aspects of broadcasting is the motto 'Long live the truth', which our Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun has expressed in many of his speeches. I hope that the continuation of journalism activities in Turkey will both contribute to the growth of a young person and serve to defend the right of truth.”

“Every magazine is a medium around which an opinion is clustered”

Cavit Erkılınç, General Manager of the Press Advertisement Institution (BİK), emphasized that magazines had an important role in the formation and development of the world of thought and understanding of art from the last period of the Ottoman Empire to the present.

Stating that the newspapers, which are always one step ahead in periodical publishing, undertake the mission of carrying the ideas produced in a wide range of magazines from literature to history, from art to philosophy, Erkılınç said:

“The fact that production in the field of art, poetry, story, criticism, and our world of thought as a whole has attained a constantly lively, always active, in fact, ever-living norm and never lost its dynamism has been thanks to the magazines published with great difficulty. The magazines in which ideas are produced, discussed and disseminated are also noteworthy for their ability to bring the masses together by creating a unique tradition. Magazines, which we can describe as the cuisine of literature, art and world of thought, provided an opportunity to write a note on the history of humanity by providing an opportunity for unity beyond any privilege and status.”

Expressing that journalism is a great love and passion, Erkılıç said that the generations of the 80s and 90s will understand this the most, and that at that time, every magazine, a school, a school, a thought was the medium around which its students and owners were clustered.

“It is a very difficult job to keep magazines alive”

Ali Odabaş, General Manager of Libraries and Publications, said that one of the most important criteria for libraries is the continuity of magazines and said, “It is a very difficult task to keep magazines alive. But librarians also decide on the quality of the journal in terms of volume integrity by looking at its continuity. Our general directorate does its best to keep independent journals alive.” said.

Stating that they make about 400 subscriptions per year within the framework of budget possibilities, Odabaş said, “Maybe there are magazines that live only through our subscriptions. We received more than 2023 magazine applications for 300. We subscribe to almost all of the printed magazines.” used the phrase.

“We have an obligation to bring our young people together with cultural studies”

DERGİBİR President Metin Uçar pointed out that the system constantly makes young people compete and said, “We have an obligation to bring our young people from behind somehow together with cultural studies. In this sense, we carried out our journalism school activities that we carried out with various public institutions. The perspectives that the speakers will present in the sessions here today will pave the way for us.” said.

Referring to the importance of magazine fairs, Uçar said, “A fair environment is instrumental in the birth of a magazine, a magazine, a school. The important thing is to raise the next generations that will ensure sustainability. I think the fair is valuable in this regard.” he said.

IU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Haluk Alkan touched upon the academic journals and the place of IU in academic publishing and gave information about the deep-rooted history of scientific publishing at the university.

The opening conference of the congress, where Argetus consultant Erol Erdoğan shared the results of the Journalism Research, was given by the poet and writer Ali Ural, Editor-in-Chief of Karabatak Magazine.

After the opening program, the congress was moderated by İsmail Kılıçarslan and Prof. Dr. It continued with the session titled “Digital Transformation and the Future of Magazines” in which Hayati Develi, Mustafa Akar, İrfan Kaya and Şivan Arslan took part as speakers.

Within the scope of the congress, a session titled “Child, Student and Youth Journalism” will take place under the moderation of Abdullah Zerrar Cengiz and will feature Özkan Öztürk, Salih Zengin, İbrahim Altınsoy, Şeyma Subaşı and Hüseyin Cerrahoğlu as speakers.
