7 Signs of Ankle Diseases

Memorial Antalya Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology Department Prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Aydın talked about what should be known about ankle diseases and arthroscopy applications.

“Ankle is the most vulnerable joint to trauma”

Diseases that develop in the ankle are most common in athletes. Saying that the first thing to do to prevent ankle diseases is to use equipment specific to that sport, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Aydın, “In the elderly, the feet are open to trauma due to osteoporosis. In addition, sprains are often observed in women because they wear high-heeled shoes. Some problems that occur after ankle sprain are also one of the main areas of use of arthroscopy. Ankle arthroscopy is used to address a wide variety of ankle problems.

prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Aydın listed the symptoms seen in patients with ankle problems as follows:

  • Pain
  • feeling of insecurity
  • Frequent sprains
  • Inability to go up or down stairs due to limited mobility
  • inability to squat
  • sound from ankle
  • ankle swelling

Saying that some rheumatic diseases can also cause pain, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Aydın, “In ankle diseases, patients are first asked when their complaints started, how long they have been and whether there is a relationship with trauma. If some patients have swelling without any trauma, some rheumatic diseases such as gout come to mind. In this case, such diseases can be investigated. After the patient's history is taken in detail, the examination is performed. The patient is then referred for imaging or laboratory tests. If metabolic disease is suspected, it is ruled out with blood tests. X-ray, computed tomography, MRI are used in imaging methods, and ultrasound is used for swelling under the skin. Scintigraphy is rarely used. Treatment is planned according to the results.

In most ankle diseases, relief of the joint is provided by rest and sometimes physical therapy. If inactivity for an average of 3 months and physical therapy have not been effective in relieving the pain, then surgery comes into play. Ankle arthroscopy is surgery that uses a small camera and surgical instruments to examine or repair tissues in or around the ankle. The camera is called an arthroscope. The aim is to detect problems without making larger cuts in the skin and tissue and allow operation on the ankle. ” used expressions.

“In many diseases, arthroscopy is used”

In order for arthroscopy or endoscopy to be performed on the ankle, the discomfort must be in the joint or adjacent to the joint, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Turan Aydın concluded his words as follows:

“One of the most common diseases after ankle sprains is osteochondral lesion of the talus. Arthroscopy is used in diagnosis and treatment of TOL. Arthroscopy is applied in membrane inflammations localized or not in the joint, free bodies in the joint, tumors of the joint membrane, cysts in the joint, ligament ruptures in sprains, football player's foot (bone protrusions at the joint edge). Many procedures can be performed with endoscopy home arthroscopy in the soft tissue located behind the ankle joint, such as inflammation of the flexor tendon, subtorel joint arthrosis, and Haglund deformity.

A camera is attached to the head of a telescope-like close-up instrument. Surgery is performed by opening 2 holes. Optics are inserted through a hole. Liquid is injected into the joint from this optic and the area to be treated is washed and cleaned. The instruments to be operated on are inserted through the other hole. The operation takes between 1 and 1 and a half hours depending on the disease.
