The “Mediterranean and Izmir Symposium Through the Ages” organized by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality at the Fair Izmir within the scope of TTI Izmir International Tourism Trade Fair and Congress has started. Speaking at the opening, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu said, “We attach great importance to İzmir's re-engagement with the Mediterranean culture, which it derives from its historical roots and is mutually nourished by.”

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality organized the “Mediterranean and Izmir Symposium Through the Ages” at the Fair Izmir within the scope of TTI Izmir International Tourism Trade Fair and Congress. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Urban History and Publicity Department Head Mehriban Yanık, archaeologists, excavation heads and fair visitors attended the opening of the symposium.

Özuslu: “The Mediterranean has attracted people from many parts of the world”

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Mustafa Özuslu said, “We attach great importance to İzmir's re-engagement with the Mediterranean culture, which it derives from its historical roots and is mutually nourished by. The Mediterranean, where agriculture began, where the first settlements were located, and where the first civilizations were born, has attracted people from many parts of the world. The expression of unity in diversity and plurality in unity is perhaps one of the most beautiful descriptions of Mediterranean culture. The world is going through a difficult period. While trying to find a solution to this challenging process with the universal values ​​of the Mediterranean culture, we are trying to strengthen our ties with this culture again. As Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, we know that acting together with Mediterranean cities means strengthening together at the same time," he said.

Yanık: “We will ensure that the activities continue”

Mehriban Yanık, Head of the Urban History and Publicity Department of the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, said, “Archaeology is a subject that the society should know. That's why we want the society to know archeology better from now on. For this reason, we will ensure that these events continue as a series.”

After the opening, the symposium continued with the session “The Journey of Ideas and Objects in the Mediterranean: Language-Stone-Ceramics”.

The aim of the symposium is to evaluate the ties that İzmir has established with Mediterranean countries and cities through archaeological data and current research, and to explain the changes in the coastline with natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis from the past to the present.
