Anadolu Health Center Medical Oncology Specialist and Oncological Sciences Coordinator Prof. Dr. Necdet Üskent said, “The most important difference of immunotherapies from chemotherapy is that it does not contain chemicals and directs the body's natural warrior cells to the tumor. In other words, it targets the immune system, not the tumor like chemotherapy, and enables the immune system cells to fight against the tumor. Naturally, the side effects are much less compared to chemotherapy," he said.

Hair loss seen in chemotherapy does not occur in immunotherapy treatment.

Emphasizing that hair loss, which is seen in classical chemotherapy drugs, is not seen in immunotherapy drugs known as checkpoint inhibitors, Oncology Specialist and Oncological Sciences Coordinator Prof. Dr. Necdet Üskent said, “Besides, warrior cells (immune cells) stimulated by immunotherapy can attack normal cells along with cancer cells. In order to prevent this, studies are also carried out to mark cancer cells. This happens with vaccines such as CAR- T cells. We can say that side effects occur mostly in the first 3 months from the week of the treatment. However, side effects may occur up to 1 year after the end of treatment. Immune pneumonia, decrease in thyroid hormone and pituitary hormones, intestinal inflammation we call colitis are among these side effects. However, they are rarely seen at a rate of 2-5 percent and they are easy to control. Especially, the side effects that are noticed and intervened early are often mild and temporary.

Immunotherapy can be used alone or in combination with chemotherapy.

Reminding that many drugs can be mentioned in immunotherapy used today, Prof. Dr. Necdet Üskent, “The most frequently used of these is 'Checkpoint Inhibitors' (Checkpoint Inhibitor). Today, these drugs, which provide dramatic improvement in many cancers and are increasingly used, act by blocking the 'checkpoint proteins' that stop the immune system from attacking the cancerous cell. Just like chemotherapy, it is given by intravenous serum and does not require any special preparation before the application. While it was used only in the widespread stage when it was first developed, it is now used in combination with chemotherapy in early stage cancers. In this way, longer-term recovery and control of the disease can be achieved.

Immunotherapy cancer treatment will become widespread

Oncology Specialist and Oncological Sciences Coordinator Prof. Dr. Necdet Üskent said, “There will always be interference with the tumor DNA and the mitosis of the cancer cell with chemicals. But it is a fact that the use of immunotherapy will become widespread. While it is always used in advanced stage cancers today, it will be used more frequently in the coming years in earlier stages and as a preparation for surgery. Success rates in clinical studies also support these estimates.
