Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine celebrated its 44th anniversary. DEU Rector Prof. Dr. Nükhet Hotar said, “This journey, which started 44 years ago today with 12 faculty members, has turned into a brand that has become a brand today. Academic studies carried out in our DEU Faculty of Medicine, which has proven itself in the international medical world, are also of great importance for the Turkish higher education community.”
The 44th establishment anniversary of Dokuz Eylul University (DEU) Faculty of Medicine, which has an international reputation and competence, was celebrated. The anniversary event of DEU Faculty of Medicine, which was established on March 1, 1978 under the name of İzmir Faculty of Medicine and joined to Dokuz Eylül University in 1982, was held online.
Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, DEU Rector Prof.Dr. said that the faculty, which was established on March 1, 1978 under the name of Izmir Faculty of Medicine, in order to train well-equipped physicians that our country needs, was transferred to DEU in 1982. Dr. Nükhet Hotar said, “This journey, which started 44 years ago today with 12 faculty members, has turned into a brand that has become a brand today. In this process, our faculty also constituted the main backbone of our research practice hospital located in our Health Campus and providing regional services. Despite the conditions brought by the global coronavirus pandemic, which has been affecting the world for the last two years; Our teachers, who work to train individuals who will practice the profession of medicine, once again showed how self-sacrificing they can be at this point. Of course, the presence of our physicians who serve our beloved nation and heal our patients in almost every corner of our country is among the pride of our university.”
OUR FACULTY PROVE ITSELF IN THE MEDICAL SCIENCE
Expressing that the academic studies carried out at DEU Faculty of Medicine, which has proven itself in the international medical community, are important for the Turkish higher education community, DEU Rector Hotar stated that they pay special attention to the physicians who will graduate from the faculty to follow the international literature and to think multi-dimensionally. Stating that they continue to work on the physical needs of the faculty, Hotar said, “Among these, we briefly talked about our plans to meet the classroom needs of our faculty. Last October, we opened the 'Common Classrooms' service building, which cost 15 million TL, in the heart of our Health and Arts Campus on 9 July. In addition to our efforts to improve the technical facilities in our laboratories and the physical conditions in our unit, we attach importance to cooperation with authorized institutions in this field and inspection mechanisms in medical education, where the accreditation process is extremely important.
RESEARCH CERTIFICATE INCREASED OUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Rector Hotar, who stated that they always thought of doing more for the DEU Research and Practice Hospital, which received a score of 100 out of 97.65 in the evaluation of Quality Standards in Health, reminded that they were deemed worthy of being a 'Research University' in December 2021, and said, "With our certificate, our responsibilities in the fields of health and medical education also has increased. Being aware of this, we started 2022 with excitement and great desire. Our aim at this point will be to increase the visibility of our country in the scientific world and to serve our nation at many different points. Of course, we will also attach special importance to health tourism and investments that are suitable for our clustering model in health.”
Rector Hotar, who stated in the last part of his speech that our country tolerates brain drain and the loss of physicians, said, “As the Rectorate, we give special importance to our physicians. However, due to the pandemic, humanity is going through a difficult process. Moreover, unwanted wars and international developments also bother us. Despite everything, we wish our physicians and physician candidates to be more patient for our patients and our country. With these thoughts, we celebrate the 44th anniversary of our medical faculty; We commemorate our values who left us with mercy," he said.
WE HAVE CLOSE TO 7 THOUSAND PHYSICIANS.
DEU Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Asım Oktay Ergene said that approximately 7 thousand physicians graduated from the faculty and continued to serve in different corners of Turkey. Stating that many of the names who served as Rectors at DEU in the previous periods were from the Faculty of Medicine and provided great services to the faculty, Ergene said, “Our current Rector, Prof. Dr. Nükhet Hotar Hoca is one of the most important rectors who left their mark on Dokuz Eylül. In December 2021, YÖK chose Dokuz Eylül University as a Research University. In this process, as the Rector, Nükhet Hotar revealed her whole self. Contributing to the plans and projects of our Rectorate in the field of health has a special meaning for our family members, which we are proud of.”
DEU Research and Application Hospital Chief Physician V. Prof. Dr. Semih Küçükgüçlü also stated that they provide health services to an average of 1,5 million patients per year and stated that DEU hospital is the 'hospital of firsts'. Küçükgüçlü said, “The first MR imaging center, the first emergency department that offers emergency medicine specialization, the first day surgery center, the clinic of occupational diseases, GETAT Center, Covid-19 Monitoring Center are among the examples. As DEU Research and Application Hospital, we are proud of our achievements. Our Rector, who has never stopped supporting us, Prof. Dr. I would like to thank Nükhet Hotar”.
Within the scope of the program, speeches by faculty graduates took place; The academic and administrative staff who retired from DEU Faculty of Medicine and DEU Practice and Research Hospital and completed their 30 years were given their plaques.
