Choosing the right tire is an integral part of the safe driving experience. With the selection of tires suitable for the brand and model of the vehicle, you can ensure the safety of both yourself and your loved ones while driving in traffic, and you can obtain maximum efficiency from the engine performance. Using tires suitable for the season is also extremely important in terms of safety. Vehicle tires are generally divided into three: summer, winter and all seasons.
When Are Winter Tires Fitted?
Specially designed for rainy and slippery roads, which are frequently encountered in winter, winter tires aim to ensure driving safety in adverse weather conditions. It helps to prevent the vehicle from slipping by increasing the ground grip on snowy and icy roads. Winter tires should be fitted when the air temperature starts to drop below +7 degrees.
It is recommended to switch to winter tires in October and November when the weather starts to cool. Vehicles that are legally required to wear winter tires in Turkey are required to change their summer tires from 1 December. According to the laws of our country, vehicles that are obliged to install winter tires must use winter tires between 1 December and 1 April. Depending on the seasonal conditions, the expiry date of the obligation to wear winter tires can be extended by 1 month.
Can Winter Tires Be Used in Summer?
The most important advantage of winter tires is the high ground holding power on snowy, rainy and icy surfaces. Thus, the braking distance is reduced by up to 15% and accident risks are prevented. Winter tires designed for rainy, snowy and icy conditions run the risk of excessive wear in the heat of the summer. Since the rolling resistance is higher than summer tires, it increases the fuel consumption of the vehicle.
The percentage of natural rubber used in the design of winter tires is higher than that of summer tires, which makes winter tires softer. Since winter tires are softer on dry roads, they can cause the vehicle to skid on fast corners. The use of winter tires in summer causes both reduced driving safety and financial losses.
