Will Universities Open, When Will Distance Education End Explanation From YÖK

Higher Education Institution (YÖK) President Erol Özvar made a statement about the universities that were switched to distance education after the earthquake. Özvar announced that the decision taken at the beginning of April will be re-evaluated and, if necessary, a hybrid system will be adopted.

President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on February 11 that the dormitories of the Credit and Hostels Institution at universities would be turned into guesthouses for earthquake victims and that universities would be closed until the summer, and distance education would begin.

It was emphasized that universities should switch to face-to-face education. Erol Özvar, President of the Higher Education Institution (YÖK), who was in front of the cameras today, announced the new decisions about universities.

Expressing that the spring semester at universities will start in the form of distance education on February 20, Özvar said that a re-evaluation will be made in the beginning of April.

Noting that there will be face-to-face training in applied departments, Özvar stated that if necessary, a hybrid system will be introduced for other departments.

15 PERCENT OF STUDENTS ARE IN THE EARTHQUAKE ZONE

A total of 15 percent of formal students in Turkey either reside or study in the region. Unfortunately, there are losses among our students and staff.

Almost all of our universities are full of stakeholders affected by the earthquake. Our campuses have played an important role in terms of accommodation and residence. We are still monitoring the work of volunteers from medical and engineering faculties in the region.

HYBRID TRAINING

In the next process, very critical roles fall on our universities. Our universities will undoubtedly play an important role in the re-development of the provinces.

It was previously decided to provide the 2022-2023 spring semester with distance education. We made a series of decisions for associate, undergraduate and graduate departments.

Accordingly, the spring semester will begin on February 20. The decisions taken will be reviewed as of the beginning of April, and hybrid education will be evaluated by combining face-to-face education as well as distance education.

SPECIAL STUDENT ARRANGEMENT

Some of our universities in the provinces affected by the earthquake were paired with some universities to conduct joint studies.

We have also made some decisions regarding private studentship. Those who live in the provinces affected by the earthquake or whose first-degree relatives live in these provinces can become special students at the residence of their first-degree relative or at the equivalent departments of the universities in the provinces where they live.
