About Burkina Faso Railway

Burkina Faso is a landless country located in the western part of the African continent. Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana and the Ivory Coast make up the country's border neighbors (clockwise from the north). The country, which was a colony of France in the past, gained independence in 1960 under the name of Upper Volta. As a result of political uncertainties in the post-independence period, coups occurred, on 4 August 1983 under the leadership of Thomas Sankara, the country's name was changed to Burkina Faso as a result of the revolution. The capital of the country is Ouagadougou.

There is one railway line called the Abidjan - Niger Line in Burkina Faso, which connects the capital and commercial city of Abidjan with the capital city of Ouagadougou. This process, which was troubled for Burkina Faso, which is a land country due to the civil war shortage in Ivory Coast, plays an important role in the transportation of the country's commercial products to the sea. Currently, both cargo and passenger transportation is carried out on this line. In the period of Sankara, although the necessary efforts were made to extend the length of the line to the city of Kaya in order to carry the underground riches found here, these activities were terminated with the end of the Sankara period.

Only 33 of the 2 airports across the country have asphalt runways. Ouagadougou Airport airport, located in the capital city of Ouagadougou, which is also the largest airport in the country, and the airport in Bobo-Dioulasso, are the two airports in line with the international standards of the country.

The country owns one national airline company named Air Burkina, headquartered in the capital, Ouagadougou. After the company was founded on March 17, 1967 under the name of Air Volta, it started to perform the flights carried out by companies originating in France, and the company name was nationalized in accordance with the Sankara revolutions in the country. As one of the participants of Burkina Faso, part of the Air Burkina company was privatized in 2002, due to the financial bankruptcy of Air Afrique, which was operated by many African countries together with France.

In addition to domestic flights, Air Burkina airlines organize reciprocal flights to seven different countries. The countries where international flights are carried out are: Benin, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo.

There are 12.506 km of roads across the country, of which 2.001 km are paved. In the evaluation made by the World Bank in 2001, Burkina Faso transportation network was evaluated as good especially with its connections to the countries of the region, Mali, Ivory Coast, GAna, Togo and Niger.
