The Historic Peninsula, which is a very important center of attraction due to its rich historical texture and hosts millions of visitors every day, will breathe with a new pedestrianization project. The Laleli region, where Istanbul University and historical mosques and structures are located, also hosts an intense pedestrian circulation. With the effect of the development of trade, the area, which is a very active region, has been experiencing serious traffic jams for years. Local and foreign tourists who want to visit the historical, cultural and touristic places in the region with the residents of the district are deprived of uninterrupted access due to vehicle traffic.

RESIDENTS AND TRADESTORS HAVE BEEN INFORMED

Based on these facts, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Transport Coordination Center (UKOME) unanimously adopted the "Ordu Street and Surrounding Pedestrianization Project" in November 2020, starting from Monday, August 16, 2021.

IMM teams held meetings with Fatih Municipality, LASİAD (Laleli Businessmen's Association) in the past months, got their opinions and gave information about the stages of the project. Afterwards, the opinions of tradesmen and citizens were taken by visiting the region street by street, information was given about the pedestrianization work and brochures were distributed.

With the project, it is aimed to increase pedestrian accessibility, to contribute to the historical, cultural and touristic texture, to regulate vehicle traffic circulation in accordance with the historical texture, to reduce air and noise pollution, and to further develop the commercial activities of the tradesmen in the region.

IMPORTANT HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND COMMERCIAL AREAS ARE PEDESTRIBING

In line with the UKOME decision; In addition to 59 streets and streets that have a pedestrianization decision in the region, 28 more avenues and streets will be pedestrianized. Controlled traffic circulation will be provided on 16 streets and streets, including Ordu Street, where the tram passes.

Pedestrianization project; It covers the whole of Kemalpaşa-Mesihpaşa and Mimar Kemalettin neighborhoods in Fatih district. The area within Atatürk Boulevard, Şehzadebaşı - Hayriye Merchant - Türkali and Theater streets is pedestrianized.

Streets and streets where controlled traffic circulation will be provided; It will be closed to vehicle (motor vehicle) traffic between 10.00-21.00, except for official, touristic and logistic vehicles and commercial taxis. On pedestrianized streets and streets with controlled traffic circulation; workplace operators will be able to carry out loading, unloading and other operations only from 21.00:10.00 at night to XNUMX:XNUMX in the morning.

In order to control the traffic flow, in addition to the 49 existing hydraulic barriers at 199 points in the district, 22 new hydraulic barriers were built at 41 points. Pedestrian and traffic flow in the region will be supervised by the Istanbul Police Department, IMM and Fatih Municipality police.

TRAFFIC FLOW ROUTE RENOVATED

Traffic regulation was also renewed within the scope of the works. At the intersection of Genç Caddesi - Şehzadebaşı Caddesi, a geometric arrangement was made for the right turn at the exit of Genç Caddesi. Vezneciler junction has been adjusted to make a left turn. At the intersection of Gençtürk Street and Fethibey Streets and Ordu Street, physical and signaling arrangements were applied for the passage of vehicles.
