Amtrak, or officially the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (National Rail Passenger Corporation), is the agency that operates the US passenger Rail services, which is partially government-funded.
Amtrak was established by the federal government on May 1, 1971. The system consists of 34.000 km of rail lines and connects more than 46 locations in 500 different states (all except South Dakota and Wyoming, and Hawaii and Alaska, which have no common borders with the country).
