In the series, Evan Peters starred as Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer who killed many people in and around the Midwest from the late 1970s to the 1990s. Despite public outcry and fair criticism of the show's treatment of victims, Monster remains the fourth most popular Netflix series ever, after Squid Game, Stranger Things, and Wednesday.

Whether you like it or not, Netflix has decided to extend the series for two more seasons, and on May 1, 2023, the publisher shared more details about its plans. Next season will be named Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, after the convicted brothers.

Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season. This post was last updated on June 28, 2023.

Monster seasons 2 and 3 are coming

With the popularity of Monster, Netflix renewed the series for two more seasons almost instantly. The series premiered in September, and Netflix announced a multi-season renewal in November. That's a quick turnaround for a Netflix revamp!

Monster season 2 and the third season of the hit Netflix original series are officially running on Netflix. Watcher's 2nd season was also announced along with Monster's renewal.

Netflix's Monster will be an anthology series

Netflix also confirmed that Monster will be an anthology series, meaning viewers will get a different serial killer story each season. In its press release, the platform shared that the series will continue to tell stories about “other monstrous figures affecting society.” The series will likely focus on the different serial killers of American history and their progressive victims.

It's hard to say where the creative team is in the development process. Ryan Murphy has a number of shows and projects he's working on but we have to assume Monster will take precedence on Netflix with the series being so popular.

What is Monster season 2 about?

As the name suggests, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will follow the story of the notorious brothers. He was convicted of murdering his parents, Jose and Kitty Menedez, in the late 1980s. The case, understandably, was widely covered across the country, and the trial was incredibly complex. The brothers accused their father of abuse but were eventually sentenced to life imprisonment.

Monster season 2 title announcement teaser

Now that we have more details on season two, Netflix has also shared a short teaser to give us an idea of what to expect:

Does anyone have a role in Monster season 2?

So far, there is no one officially in the cast of Monster season 2. Netflix likes to keep things private for as long as possible and then give a big update when the news is ready. Although we know who will come in the second season, it is still very difficult to predict who will take part in the new season.

However, there are many actors and actresses who have reappeared in Murphy's works, including Evan Peters, who may return for season 2 but in a different role. We know the Jeffrey Dahmer story has been told, and it won't be covered again in the new season.

Ryan Murphy is leaving Netflix for Disney

While we were waiting for any news regarding new seasons of Netflix shows, shocking news came in June announcing that Ryan Murphy will be leaving the streaming service for Disney. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy signed a $2018 million deal with Netflix in 300, and the contract expires at the end of June 2023. So what does this mean for Murphy's current shows on Netflix, specifically Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story? ?

Murphy reportedly creates new titles for Disney, while Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez and The Watcher will remain executive producers for season 2. If we hear that this has changed, we'll be sure to update this post.

Monster season 2 release date?

No, there is no release date for Monster season 2 yet. Still, it's not surprising at this point. It hasn't been too long since the refresh, and as they're effectively starting from scratch with this series, there's no known timeline for how long this might take. But now that Netflix has introduced the second season, we hope to receive more updates soon!

The good news is that alongside the title announcement, Netflix confirmed on May 1 that Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will be out in 2024. will be released next year. The Jeffrey Dahmer Story aired at the end of September for the spooky season, so it's possible we could see season two coming out in the fall of 2024. But for now, that's just us speculating.

Will Monster season 2 be delayed due to writers' strike?

All this despite Netflix's announcement that Monster season 2 will air in 2024, that was before WGA Strike even started. The contract between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Motion Picture and Television Producers Association (AMPTP) expired in early May and they have yet to reach an agreement. Basically, the writers of our favorite shows want to update their contracts with better terms, but the studios don't.

The studios still haven't moved, and that means the writers' Monster season 2 room can't legally begin until the WGA strike is over. We have no confirmation of when the strike will end, but many suspect it will continue throughout the summer. If scripts for Monster season 2 aren't written by the end of this year, it's still possible to come out in 2024.

That's all we know about Monster season 2 so far! We'll let you know when we learn more about the new season.
