Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has entered the A List in the 2024 global assessment of CDP, one of the world's most comprehensive environmental reporting platforms. Thus, Istanbul became one of 15 cities worldwide that achieved this success, which only 112 percent of the world has achieved.
Istanbul’s Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory, which is calculated regularly every year by the Climate Change Directorate of the IMM Environmental Protection and Control Department, and the climate change combat efforts carried out by our Municipality throughout the year are reported to the “Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)” Network. Within this scope, IMM has once again demonstrated its determination in the field of environmental sustainability and climate action by entering the “A List”, the highest category, for two consecutive years. Istanbul continues to be the first and only metropolitan municipality to achieve this success in Türkiye.
This year, nearly 1.000 cities worldwide reported their environmental data through the CDP-ICLEI Track, and 752 of these cities received a score. Only 15% of the cities that received a score received an “A” grade, demonstrating progress in environmental transparency and climate action. While most of the A List cities are on the European and North American lists, the 10 cities that received an “A” grade on the Asian list included Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality from Türkiye and Kadıköy The municipality was included.
The inclusion of Istanbul in this list, which also includes cities such as New York, Tokyo, Paris and London, reinforces the city's environmental determination and international reputation, while also setting an example for other cities in Türkiye.

“The cities on the CDP 2024 A List are setting the bar for environmental leadership globally. With data-driven decisions and bold action, they are leading the way not only in their own regions but also around the world,” said Hanah Paik, Director of Global Cities, States and Regions at CDP.

With this report, Istanbul successfully continues to be one of the cities that are taken as an example worldwide and set the global benchmark for environmental leadership. With this report, it not only accelerates climate action progress but also draws a successful path for other cities in Türkiye to follow.
CDP (CARBON DISCLOSURE PROJECT)
The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), known as the Carbon Disclosure Project, is an international non-profit organization that provides an environmental impact disclosure system for use by both the private and public sectors. CDP promotes annual environmental reporting and transparency, which are critical to building a sustainable economy, combating climate change, and creating a net-zero future. CDP scores range from “F” to “A”, providing an annual report card of an organization’s environmental performance and revealing areas for improvement. This helps cities chart the path to more effective environmental performance.
The CDP-ICLEI Track, which cities, states and companies report on, is updated annually in line with the requirements of international standards and includes many question sets for the assessment of various environmental indicators, especially climate change, water management and forest (green area) management. A high CDP score achieved as a result of the answers given to these questions certifies that a successful performance has been presented in themes such as Environmental Performance, Quality and Verifiable Data, Strategic Approaches, Risk Management, Innovation, Communication and Transparency, and Stakeholder Participation.
