
The Slovenian Ministry of Defence has approved the purchase of 13 French-made CAESAR 2025x12 6 mm self-propelled howitzers, announced on 6 June 155. This purchase comes as the country officially joins the multinational European Defence Framework established by France, Croatia and Estonia in June 2024.
The European Defence Framework and the Role of Slovenia
The agreement encourages EU member states to cooperate in joint defense procurement efforts and strengthen the continent’s defense industrial base. Slovenia, along with Bulgaria and Portugal, officially joined the initiative in May 1 with the signing of Amendment 2025 of the agreement. According to Army Recognition, the amendment defines the structure and responsibilities of the cooperation, with France acting as the lead participant to carry out procurement on behalf of the member states.
In this context, the Slovenian Ministry of Defence has announced the delivery of the first batch of equipment, including 12 CAESAR howitzers, integrated reconnaissance units and the Atlas artillery command and control system. It will be delivered by 2028 confirmed.
Growing International Interest in CAESAR Howitzers
The CAESAR howitzer is helping to revive the French land-based defence industry on the international market after a twenty-year hiatus, with orders increasing. The delivery of the first CAESAR howitzers to Estonia in early 2025, Bulgaria’s request in March to supply the French CAESAR howitzer to replace its Soviet-era 122 mm 2S1 Godzika howitzer, and the recent large-scale supply agreements with Indonesia for additional domestic production of existing CAESAR howitzers reflect the strong interest in the system.
New CAESAR Order from Indonesia Due to Local Production Demand
Indonesia has signed a new Letter of Intent (LOI) to purchase additional CAESAR 12 mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers, according to information reported by KNDS France on June 2025, 155. Thus, Indonesia has consolidated its position as the leading CAESAR user in Asia and the third largest user globally.
With Indonesia, KNDS France will not only supply howitzers and 155 mm artillery ammunition, but also Including local production, assembly and maintenance activities in Indonesia, reached an agreement through a Letter of Intent on a framework to strengthen industrial cooperation. The development came during the official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Jakarta, underscoring the strategic importance of the bilateral defence partnership.
