New Understanding of Canon in the Resident Evil Universe

Resident Evil fans have long wondered about the question of "Are the original games or remakes part of the main story?" The latest statement from Dusk Golem, a reliable insider in the series, has found an answer. According to Capcom, there is only one answer to this question: Both! The company considers both the original and remakes to be a single canon, leaving any discrepancies in the details to the imagination of players.

Canon Boundaries and Flexible Details

Capcom's Resident Evil story direction is the series' focuses on keeping core events, character deaths, and BOWs (Bio Organic Weapons) as consistent as possible. However, it is quite flexible in terms of place, time and details. For example, differences such as whether Jill Valentine went to the RPD or whether Brad Vickers died both by zombie attack and at the hands of Nemesis are explained by this new understanding of canon, where both versions are considered valid.

Similarly, in Resident Evil 3 Remake, it is revealed that Nemesis was created from the Las Plagas virus, while in RE4 Remake, it is explained that Luis took part in this project. According to Dusk Golem, such details make the series more connected, but also bring some contradictions. What is important for Capcom is that the general flow of events does not change: Brad dies, Krauser is defeated, the battle between Jill and Nemesis begins. The rest of the details are up to the players to decide which version they like. In other words, both realities are accepted as true in the Resident Evil universe.

Location of Revelations and Other Spin-offs

With this new understanding of the canon, The positioning of the Revelations series has also been clarified. Originally designed as interludes, these stories are now considered by Capcom to be part of the main story. According to Dusk Golem, games like Revelations and Code Veronica are considered as important as the numbered games.

Other spin-offs on Capcom's canon list include Survivor, Outbreak, Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles There are games like. However, Gaiden, Operation Raccoon City and some mobile games are not included in this list. In short, if you are planning a Resident Evil marathon, it is recommended that you do not skip Revelations and Code Veronica, as they are right in the middle of the series, according to Capcom.

This approach will give Resident Evil fans the freedom to experience the series however they want, while also allowing Capcom more flexibility in storytelling in future games.
