IMM continues its 'Public Gardens' project, which it started in 2022. Istanbulites grow their own vegetables in public gardens serving in Kartal, Pendik Yenişehir and Harmandere. The vegetables that Istanbulites have grown the most in 5 years have been tomatoes, peppers and curly lettuce.
While Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues to support agriculture and farmers, it also allows Istanbulites to grow their own vegetables and fruits. Interest in public gardens, which have been serving since 2022, is increasing day by day. In addition to providing the opportunity to rehabilitate by working with the soil, public gardens also contribute to the production of healthy products.
TOMATO, PEPPER AND CURLY LETTUCE AT THE TOP
Hundreds of Istanbulites have grown their own vegetables in the public gardens run by the IMM Directorate of Agriculture and Aquaculture since 2022. The vegetables Istanbulites grow the most are tomatoes and peppers in the summer, while curly lettuce and cabbage in the winter.
NEW PUBLIC GARDENS WILL BE OPENED
In order for Istanbulites to benefit from the public garden, they must reside in the district where the garden is established. The beneficiaries are determined by drawing lots among the bidders. Thus, it is entitled to a 1-year usage period. Draw applications are made to the headman's office to which the garden is affiliated in April.
It is planned to increase the number of public gardens currently serving in three neighborhoods: Kartal Karlıktepe, Pendik Yenişehir and Harmandere.
BASIC TRAININGS FROM IMM
Basic training on vegetable cultivation is also provided in the public garden. The training is provided practically by agricultural engineers affiliated with the IMM Agricultural Services Department. In addition, summer and winter vegetable seedling support that may be required for cultivation is provided to beneficiaries. The planting of the seedlings is carried out by beneficiaries under the supervision of IMM agricultural engineers. 2025 summer vegetable seedlings were planted for 9.090.
