Guterres: US Attack on Iran 'Could Have Disastrous Consequences'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was “gravely concerned” about the attacks carried out by the United States against Iran early Sunday. Guterres stressed that tensions in the region were already at an extreme level, called for immediate peace and warned against further escalation.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement: “I am gravely concerned about the United States’ use of force against Iran today. "This is a dangerous escalation in a region that is already on the edge of a cliff and a direct threat to international peace and security," he said.

Guterres said the current conflict risks spiralling out of control, creating serious risks for civilians, the region and the entire world. could have disastrous consequences expressed serious concerns about the matter.

Emphasis on Diplomacy and Urgent Call

The UN Secretary-General called on all UN member states to reduce tensions in accordance with their obligations under the UN Charter and international law. “There is no military solution,” Guterres said. “The only way forward is diplomacy,” he said, inviting the parties to sit at the negotiating table and find peaceful solutions.
