Swiss rail giant Stadler has achieved a major milestone in the UK’s freight rail transformation with the delivery of its first Class 99 dual-mode locomotives to the Port of Bristol. The shipment is part of a contract signed between Stadler, Beacon Rail and GB Railfreight in 2022 for 30 advanced Co’Co’ locomotives designed for flexible and sustainable transport across Britain.
Environmentally Friendly Transportation with Hybrid Power
The Class 99 model can operate using overhead power lines where possible. In cases where there is no electrical infrastructure, it provides a powerful, low-emission Stage V diesel engine This ‘dual-mode’ capability offers unprecedented flexibility for operations across different parts of the UK’s rail network and plays a critical role in helping the country meet its net zero carbon targets.
The locomotives delivered will be transferred to Leicester for comprehensive testing and final commissioning. Stadler Rail Services will manage the maintenance and technical inspections of this process. Commercial operations Starting at the end of 2025 The remaining 28 units are expected to be delivered in phases until 2026.
Versatile Design and Advanced Features
Based on the proven Eurodual concept, the Class 99 has been adapted to UK standards. These locomotives are: Speeds up to 120 km/h and can reach 25kV AC power lines 6MW power can produce. 500 kN traction force This flexibility enables efficient transport on both electrified and non-electrified routes, supporting the decarbonisation goals of the rail sector by helping to replace traditional diesel-only fleets.
Driver comfort and safety have also been at the forefront of the Class 99 design. Inside the cabin, drivers benefit from ergonomic seating, large forward-facing windows and integrated camera systems. These features increase operational efficiency by providing safety, comfort and excellent visibility in all conditions.
Prioritize Security and Modernization
Stadler attaches great importance to efficiency and safety in its new fleet deployment. Class 99, AWS (Automatic Warning System) and TPWS (Train Protection and Warning System) It integrates systems that meet key UK rail safety regulations, such as: 1.15A, 1.2 ...
Combining dual-mode power, advanced engineering and reduced emissions, Stadler delivers a next-generation solution for UK freight operators looking to modernise and decarbonise. This delivery further underlines Stadler’s commitment to innovation, reliability and environmental responsibility in the evolving rail industry. This step towards a more sustainable and efficient future for the UK’s rail transport could be an inspiration for the entire sector.
