
Leaders of the G7 countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States) will meet on Sunday in Kananaskis, Alberta, a remote town nestled in the foothills of Canada's Rocky Mountains, for three days of intense talks.
This will be the 51st G7 summit. The first summit was held in Rambouillet, France, in 1975. At the time, the summit was known as the G6 meeting because Canada did not become a member until the following year.

Russia joined the forum in 1998, forming the G8, but was effectively expelled in 2014 after its annexation of Crimea. Since then, the forum has been known as the G7.
Tensions are expected to be high at this year's meeting, which will be held from June 15-17, for a number of reasons.
Intense discussions are expected on the unfolding crisis in the Middle East after Israel launched massive attacks on military and nuclear facilities in Iran on Friday. This year's meeting comes against the backdrop of aggressive trade tariffs that US President Donald Trump imposed earlier this year and then suspended for all countries except China, which has now reached an agreement with the US.
