Even though it’s been ten years since The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red continues to work with the same enthusiasm and free spirit on The Witcher 4. Studio veteran and Witcher 4 narrative director Philipp Weber said that they shaped the project with the creative chaos of the old days. Full-scale development of the new game began in late 2024.
“Old Air” and Creative Approach
Philipp Weber states that the Witcher 4 team is moving with boundless energy, just like in the Witcher 3 era. Weber, who started as a quest designer for Witcher 2013 in 3, emphasizes that the “creative chaos” environment of those days is also reflected in Witcher 4. “Sometimes I say: Just do it. Work dirty like before, finish fast!” he says, summing up the team’s working style. This shows that the team is working with a more flexible and experimental approach, stepping outside of traditional game development processes.
Of course, this seemingly irregular method is actually Respect for the legacy of The Witcher 3 a result. Weber says that they will continue the same storytelling philosophy in the new game, but they will also seek answers to different questions. In this way, both a faithful sequel will emerge and a fresh experience will be offered with new experiments. This approach reveals the search for an innovative experience while remaining loyal to the series' roots.
Expectation-Raising Promotional Video and Release Date
CD Projekt Red recently shared the technological promotional video it prepared for Witcher 4. Spectacular valleys, enchanted forests and scenes reflecting the gloomy atmosphere of the Middle Ages raised the expectations of the players. All this “creative chaos” and passion seems promising for the fans of the series. However, players will have to wait a little longer; The Witcher 4 is not expected to be released before 2027. This long development period can be considered as an indication of the scope of the project and the attention given to its details.
