China Responds Harshly to Israel-Iran Tensions

Following Israel's attacks on Iran, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that they strongly oppose such actions that threaten peace and stability in the region. Israel's attacks on nuclear facilities in Iran have led Beijing to loudly voice its concern about rising tensions in the region.

China: “We Oppose Actions That Violate Iran’s Sovereignty”

China Ministry of Foreign Affairs SözcüIn his statement, Lin Jian harshly criticized Israel's actions. “We oppose Israel’s actions that violate Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” Jian said. Stressing that the sudden tension in the region was not in anyone's interest, Jian said, "China urges all relevant parties to refrain from steps that would lead to further escalation and act in a way that promotes regional peace and stability."

Beijing’s Signal of Mediation and Diplomatic Efforts

Beijing has made it clear that it will continue its diplomatic efforts to prevent the conflict from escalating further. Sözcü “China is ready to play a constructive role to help reduce tensions,” Jian said, signaling mediation. This statement was interpreted as an indication of China's desire to increase its diplomatic influence in the Middle East and play an active role in regional issues.

Stance Against Sanctions and Regional Influence

China is a country that has long repeatedly opposed US sanctions against Iran. Beijing significantly increased its diplomatic influence in the Middle East by mediating diplomatic rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia in 2023.

China's stance also drew attention during the recent vote of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the draft resolution stating that Iran was not fulfilling its nuclear obligations. China, along with Russia and Burkina Faso, voted “no”, opposing the agency’s first official decision on Iran in 20 years.

The Only Option is Political and Diplomatic Path

Ambassador Li Song, China's Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stressed that political and diplomatic channels are the only valid options for resolving the issue of Iran's nuclear program. Li Song stated that the priority of the international community should be to promote political and diplomatic contacts based on mutual respect. Calling for avoiding sanctions policies and threats of use of force, Li said all parties should act together to reach a new consensus based on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Li also stressed that it is of great importance to promote dialogue and negotiations to find an inclusive and balanced solution that takes into account the legitimate security concerns of all parties involved.

Call to Prioritize Diplomacy

In March, China hosted trilateral talks with Iranian and Russian officials on the nuclear program. The common message of these talks was to “prioritize diplomacy, not pressure and threats.” In April, the Chinese Foreign Minister told his Iranian counterpart that he “opposes the use of force and unilateral sanctions.” China’s consistent stance once again demonstrates its determination to reduce tensions in the Middle East and find solutions through diplomatic means.
