All-Time Container Record Broken in Turkish Ports

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu said, “The amount of containers handled at ports in May increased by 17,6 percent compared to the same month last year, reaching 366 million 430 thousand XNUMX TEU. Thus, we broke the record of all time by reaching the highest amount of containers handled at our ports in a month.”

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu evaluated the maritime statistics for May 2025. Stating that they continue their efforts to ensure that Türkiye gets a greater share of maritime trade, Uraloğlu said, “The amount of containers handled at ports in May increased by 17,6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 366 million 430 thousand 5 TEU. Thus, we broke the all-time record by reaching the highest amount of containers handled at our ports in a month.” Minister Uraloğlu also stated that the amount of containers handled at ports in the first 3,1 months of the year increased by 5 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 817 million 227 thousand XNUMX TEU.

5 Million 230 Thousand 61 Tons of Cargo Handled in 982 Months

Minister Uraloğlu, who also evaluated the data on cargo handling in ports, said, “The amount of cargo handled in our ports in May of this year was 48 million 166 thousand 570 tons. The total amount of cargo handled in our ports in the January-May period reached 230 million 61 thousand 982 tons.”

“International Freight Transportation Reached 35 Million 822 Thousand 570 Tons”

Noting that the amount of cargo sent to foreign ports in May increased by 2024 percent compared to the same month of 4,1, reaching 13 million 612 thousand 552 tons, Uraloğlu said, “The amount of cargo coming to our ports from foreign ports increased by 2,6 percent compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 22 million 210 thousand 18 tons. In May, foreign cargo transportation increased by 2024 percent compared to the same month of 3,2, reaching 35 million 822 thousand 570 tons.”

Aliağa Regional Port Authority at the Summit

Uraloğlu stated that the highest cargo handling in May was carried out in the port facilities operating within the administrative borders of the Aliağa Regional Port Authority with 7 million 825 thousand 874 tons of cargo, and added, “Aliağa Regional Port Authority was followed by Kocaeli Regional Port Authority with 7 million 413 thousand 983 tons and İskenderun Regional Port Authority with 6 million 250 thousand 843 tons.”

Uraloğlu stated that in May, the transit cargo transportation by sea in the ports was 6 million 424 thousand 286 tons, while the amount of cargo carried by cabotage was 5 million 919 thousand 714 tons.

The Cargo Type That Increased the Most Is 40' Full Container

Uraloğlu noted that the type of cargo that showed the biggest increase in May compared to the previous month was 890-foot full containers with an increase of 637 thousand 40 tons, and that 7 million 949 thousand 551 tons of 40-foot full containers were handled at the ports. Uraloğlu made the following statements in his statement:

“In May, Portland cement was the most carried cargo type from our ports to abroad by ships with 275 million 543 thousand 2 tons. This cargo type was followed by clinker and feldspar cargo types. Crude oil ranked first among the cargo types carried by ships coming to our ports from abroad with 534 million 822 thousand XNUMX tons. This was followed by unbriquetted coal and scrap iron cargo types, respectively.”

Most Freight Came From Russia

Uraloğlu noted that the highest amount of cargo carried by sea to go abroad was carried out in shipments to Italy, followed by shipments to the US and Spain. Uraloğlu also reported that the highest amount of cargo arriving at ports by sea was carried out in shipments from Russia.
