Employees of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), built by the Russian State Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom in Mersin, are attending trainings organized by the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD). Volunteer search and rescue team members regularly attend search and rescue trainings.
The training provided both theoretically and practically covers many different topics such as conducting reconnaissance activities under emergency conditions, organization of search and rescue operations, evacuation of people, tactical special preparation and map reading-topography.
AKKUYU NUCLEAR A.Ş. General Manager Sergei Butckikh made a statement on the subject.
One of the basic working principles of the Nuclear Power Plant is to be prepared at the highest level for any situation. There are emergency rescue teams at the Akkuyu NPP site, consisting of professionals and fire department personnel officially accredited by Türkiye's state institutions. Since 2023, an off-staff search and rescue team has also been established to provide this service. Volunteers from among AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. employees are selected within the company and sent to receive 2-week training at AFAD's special training center. Employees who receive the necessary theoretical and practical information for rescue work here also undergo physical competence tests.
At the end of the training, participants will be given state-approved certificates confirming their skills in emergency rescue operations. The training has been held regularly since last year. Last year, 32 AKKUYU NÜKLEER A.Ş. employees completed the course, while this year, 45 more people are expected to successfully complete the course at the AFAD training center.
Akkuyu NPP Project; It provides the development of inter-institutional cooperation in many areas, including industry and education, as well as the work of supervisory institutions and emergency services. In this context, Akkuyu NPP Fire Safety Unit established an effective cooperation with operational services in the region where the nuclear power plant is built. Akkuyu NPP Fire Safety Unit employees also play an active role in extinguishing forest and industrial fires in and around Mersin province.
