Memory Journey Project in Sur

Diyarbakir Metropolitan Municipality, by undertaking an important project in the Sur district, the historical heart of the city, carried out the promotion event of the “Social and Spatial Memory Journey Project”, which aims to keep the social and spatial memory of young people alive. This meaningful event, which was brought to life by the Department of Culture and Social Affairs in cooperation with the Amed Memory Collective, was organized in the City Museum in the historical Cemilpaşa Mansion belonging to the Metropolitan Municipality and started with the participation of young people between the ages of 18-35.

Reviving Memory with Young People

The main purpose of the project was determined as reviving the memory of Diyarbakır's rich historical and cultural heritage and transferring it to future generations. The project, which initially started with the participation of young people, is planned to include children in the future. In this way, it is aimed to strengthen the connection established with the city's past and to prevent alienation from cultural values.

Journey to Cultural Values

The “Social and Spatial Memory Journey Project” will provide participants with the opportunity to get to know the cultural texture of Diyarbakır up close. Within the scope of the project, emphasis will be placed on sharing experiences as well as theoretical knowledge. Young people and children will embark on a memory journey by learning on-site the social, spatial, historical and cultural significance of 20 different memory sites to be determined in the Sur district. This journey will contribute to the development of an in-depth understanding of the city’s past. At the end of the project, participants will graduate from this special program. With this event, Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality and Amed Memory Collective aim to make a significant contribution to the young generations’ protection of the city’s cultural heritage and its transfer to the future.
