Chinese railway giant CRRC (China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation) has taken an important step towards its goal of modernizing Malaysia’s intercity transport and increasing local production. The company has delivered the first two ETS2020 (Electric Train Set 3) electric trains to Malaysia under a contract signed in 3.
The modern six-carriage trains arrived at the Batu Gajah depot of Malaysian railway operator KTMB (Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad) in late April. The trains are scheduled to begin trial runs shortly. Following successful completion of the tests, the new ETS3 trains are expected to begin transporting passengers on metered gauge lines in August 2025.
CRRC to Build First Units in China, Rest to Be Assembled in Malaysia
CRRC has built the first two trains under the contract at its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Zhuzhou, China. However, the remaining eight trains will be assembled locally in Malaysia at KTMB’s Batu Gajah depot. The strategic partnership aims to develop rolling stock manufacturing in Malaysia and facilitate technology transfer. The final ETS3 train under the contract is scheduled to be delivered to Malaysia in early 2026. The partnership supports the Malaysian government’s infrastructure development strategy and long-term transport modernization goals.
CRRC ETS3: Modern Systems and Advanced Security Features
The new generation ETS3 electric trains stand out with their modern systems and advanced safety features. These trains offer maximum 140 km / h can reach speed and in total 312 Passenger capacity. Designed with passenger comfort in mind, the interior combines efficiency and safety. The trains also feature a business class section specifically designed for 36 passengers.
Each ETS3 train is equipped with intelligent diagnostic systems. These systems provide continuous data on the train’s performance, helping to detect potential faults in advance and optimise maintenance processes. The trains are also equipped with driver assistance systems, which increase operational safety. ETS3 trains also meet modern crash and fire safety standards in line with international railway safety guidelines.
Security measures are not limited to active systems only. Internal batteries with 640 Ah capacity, ensures that vital life support systems (lighting, ventilation, etc.) operate uninterruptedly for two hours even in the event of a possible power outage. This feature aims to maximize passenger safety in emergency situations.
CRRC and KTMB expect the new ETS3 fleet to significantly increase passenger capacity and operational reliability on intercity lines. These modern electric trains represent a significant step towards safer, smarter and more sustainable rail transport in Malaysia.
