Prof. Dr. Ergül Halisçelik and Metropolitan Municipality administrators She attended.
“We took Yılmaz Büyükerşen as an example in many of our projects”
Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Bozbey said that Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Büyükerşen was not only the teacher of teachers but also an important artist. Stating that they always took Yılmaz Büyükerşen, who decorated Eskişehir with works of art, as an example, Mayor Bozbey expressed that they were happy to bring a work that he prepared with great effort to Bursa. Also telling the story of the making of the statue, Mayor Bozbey said, “We took Yılmaz Büyükerşen as an example in many of our projects. There are many more subjects and information that we can learn from him. I thank you for the values you have added to Eskişehir and Türkiye.”
Sultan's Mansion: A Place That Witnessed History
Reminding that the Sultan's Mansion, built by Sultan Abdülmecit in 1844, has a history stretching from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, President Bozbey explained that Atatürk first visited the mansion in 1922 and that the mansion hosted the meeting where the delegation that went to Lausanne was determined. Noting that Atatürk met his adopted daughter Sabiha Gökçen at the Sultan's Mansion during his visits to Bursa, President Bozbey added the following:
“Sabiha Gökçen crosses the wall and comes to Atatürk. She tells him that she is an orphan, but she wants to study and has dreams. Atatürk accepts her as his adopted child. She later becomes the first female pilot of Türkiye. The Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk comes here four times. We know that important decisions are made here. It is our responsibility to take care of this mansion, protect it, and share the information it contains with the guests. We must convey these values to future generations in the right way. Our Ataturk has a very beautiful saying: 'A nation without art has one of its lifebloods cut off.' That is why we should give importance to art and bring the city together with artistic elements. Yılmaz Büyükerşen is an example to us in this regard. As Bursa, we will continue our work in the footsteps of our teacher. I would like to thank Yılmaz Büyükerşen, who made the statue, and businessman Çetin Topal for their contributions.”
“The Statue is Exact in All Its Measurements”
Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Büyükerşen, who prepared the work, gave information about his art studies in Eskişehir. Expressing that he immediately accepted the offer to make a sculpture from Bursa, Büyükerşen said, “Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mustafa Bozbey is my student. When our businessman friend came and asked for his wax sculpture to be in Bursa, I said ‘Yes’. Green Bursa is God’s blessing to the Turkish nation. It has mountains, lakes, seas, and shrines. It has been a capital city. God gave this city with so many qualities as an invaluable blessing for tourism. However, past administrators were caught up in an industrialization craze. They turned beautiful Bursa into an industrial city. Bursa is the city where Gazi spent certain parts of his life. Since Mustafa Bozbey and Çetin Topal were also involved, I couldn’t help myself. The statue is exact in all its measurements. "Hopefully, Bursa will become famous for this. I hope the students of Bursa will benefit from this," he said.
Çetin Topal, who contributed to the making of the wax statue, said that he visited the Sultan's Mansion in recent months and that the current Atatürk statue did not suit the place. Topal, who later made a request to Yılmaz Büyükerşen, said, "He accepted my request with pleasure. We brought a beautiful work to the Sultan's Mansion. We must protect our values."
Following the speeches, Mayor Mustafa Bozbey presented flowers and plaques to Yılmaz Büyükerşen and Çetin Topal in memory of the day. Mayor Bozbey and his entourage then went to the Hünkâr Mansion and opened the wax statue of Atatürk for viewing.
