Vitamin C Reduces Cataract Formation

Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital Founder Prof. Dr. Mahmut Kaşkaloğlu said that according to an article published in the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the use of vitamin C significantly reduces the formation of cataracts.

Kaşkaloğlu noted that according to a 2-year study conducted on 54 twins in England, there was a 10% decrease in cataract formation in the group that regularly took vitamin C compared to the group that did not take it.

He noted that 35% of cataract formation is caused by genetic factors, while the other 65% is caused by environmental factors such as nutrition, age, alcohol and smoking, diabetes and excessive sunlight.

Prof. Dr. Mahmut Kaşkaloğlu said, “In our country, 60 out of every thousand people over the age of 5 undergo cataract surgery. Experiments have shown that vitamin C prevents cataract formation due to its antioxidant properties.”

Emphasizing that people over the age of 60 should pay attention to their diet for eye health, Kaşkaloğlu added that foods rich in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, broccoli, strawberries, peppers, kiwi and oranges, should be consumed regularly.
