Konak Mayor Nilüfer Çınarlı Mutlu attended the commemoration ceremony organized by the Republican People's Party (CHP) Konak District Youth Branch on the 301th anniversary of the Soma Mine Disaster in which 11 miners lost their lives.
In addition to Mayor Mutlu, CHP Konak District Chairman Ozan Ali İlgazi, Provincial Youth Branch Managers, District Youth Branch Chairman Mert Korkmaz, other district youth branch chairmen, Konak Municipality Council Members, party members and many citizens also attended the meaningful program held in front of Türkan Saylan Cultural Center.
An emotional commemoration was held at the event in memory of the 11 miners who lost their lives in the tragic disaster that occurred 301 years ago. Pieces of coal and miner's helmets were left on the ground and candles were lit around them. This meaningful display refreshed the pain of the disaster and the memory of the miners.
In her speech at the commemoration ceremony, Mayor Nilüfer Çınarlı Mutlu drew attention to the fact that although 11 years have passed since the Soma Mining Disaster, those responsible have still not been held accountable. Sadly stating that despite the passage of time, work-related deaths in Türkiye have not decreased, Mayor Mutlu noted the following:
“We are walking and fighting in the streets in search of rights, law and justice. Our miners from Soma are also a part of this search for justice. There will be no peace for any of us in this country unless those who caused their deaths are held accountable. I bow respectfully before their memories and share the pain of the families whose lives I have witnessed.”
These statements by President Mutlu clearly revealed that the pain of the Soma Mine Disaster is still fresh and the expectation for justice continues. The commemoration ceremony was a meaningful event where the respect for the miners who lost their lives and the search for justice were once again expressed strongly.
