Pet owners in Hong Kong will be able to add a new option to their weekend travel plans. A trial run by the MTR (Mass Transit Railway) has begun allowing pets to be transported on light rail systems, subject to certain conditions and safety guidelines.
The pilot programme, launched by MTR Corporation Limited, began on Thursday and allows passengers to travel with one cat or dog per person using a mandatory Cat/Dog Transport Pass in addition to the regular fare. This offers a significant innovation by making it easier for pet owners to travel with their pets on weekends or at other times.

In order to ensure that train journeys remain safe and clean, MTR has set up a number of rules and measures. These include the use of approved pet carriers, designated boarding points and restricted areas designated for pets. Hong Kong resident Ms Yeung, who participated in the pilot with her dog, welcomed the initiative. She said it offered a much more cost-effective alternative to taxis for pet owners who do not have a private vehicle, especially if the pets stay in their designated carriers. Many pet owners, like Ms Yeung, see the initiative as an important step in expanding public transport options.

Cheris Lee Yuen-ling, MTR’s Head of Operations and Metro Segment, said the first day of the pilot went smoothly. She confirmed that additional staff had been assigned to busy stations and that enhanced cleaning protocols were already in place. These measures are being meticulously implemented to ensure the smooth operation of the app and to avoid any inconvenience to passengers.
MTR management is actively collecting feedback throughout the pilot. Depending on public response and operational success, the trial may extend beyond the initial two-month timeline. The company stresses that it is committed to striking a delicate balance between passenger needs and animal welfare.
This important step reflects a growing shift towards more inclusive and modern urban transport policies in Hong Kong.
