CHP Chairman Özgür Özel was attacked following the funeral ceremony of TBMM Group Deputy Chairman and DEM Party MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that an investigation was launched into the incident and the attacker was detained.
The incident took place at the funeral ceremony of Sırrı Süreyya Önder held at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM). CHP leader Özgür Özel was attacked with a fist by a person after attending the ceremony. During the attack, Özel was seen holding his head and his bodyguards intervened.
CHP Diyarbakır Deputy Zengin Tanrıkulu condemned the attack and said, “A shameless, a scoundrel, a provocateur. He is a provocateur who calls himself a child of the Ottoman Empire.”
SÖZCÜ TV reporter Meral Danyıldız reported in her live broadcast from in front of the Atatürk Cultural Center that the attacker was taken by ambulance after the attack and that CHP leader Özgür Özel's health condition was good and that there were no signs of any injuries on his face.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office made the first statement regarding the incident, saying, "There is an investigation into the beating of the Republican People's Party Chairman Özgür Özel, who participated in the incident today, and the person who carried out the act has been caught and detained. A detailed investigation is ongoing. Information will be provided on the developments." The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that a detailed investigation is being conducted regarding the incident and that the developments will be shared with the public.
