Alstom, a global pioneer in smart and sustainable mobility, today introduced the first of its new-generation regional train fleet connecting the Italian region of South Tyrol with the Austrian region of Tyrol. A total of 21 Coradia Stream trains will enter service as part of this project, implemented in collaboration with STA – Strutture Trasporto Alto Adige SpA. The first train was introduced at Malles Venosta station (BZ) as part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the Val Venosta railway. This meaningful event was recorded as an important milestone for the development of cross-border transport on critical routes such as Malles-Lienz and Innsbruck-Bolzano.
High Participation Presentation Ceremony
The launch ceremony, held at Malles Venosta station, was attended by important figures from the region and the country. The President of the Autonomous Region of Bozen/Bolzano Arno Kompatscher, the Provincial Councilor for Transport Daniel Alfreider, the Provincial Councilor for Transport in Tyrol Renè Zumtobel, the District Community President Roselinde Gunsch Koch, the General Manager of STA Joachim Dejaco and the General Manager of Alstom Italy Michele Viale were among those who witnessed this historic moment. The speeches at the event emphasized the value that the new train fleet will add to regional transport and the importance of cross-border cooperation.
Designed and Made in Italy
The Coradia Stream trains, meticulously manufactured at Alstom’s Savigliano facilities in Italy, stand out with their state-of-the-art features. Able to reach a top speed of 160 km/h, these modern trains are 127,9 meters long and offer comfortable travel for up to 381 passengers. One of the most important features of the new Coradia Stream trains is that they are equipped with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) signaling system, which ensures seamless interoperability between international borders. Thanks to this, passengers will be able to travel without any disruption at border crossings.
Evaluation from Alstom Italy General Manager
“With over 600 Coradia Stream trains designed, built and put into commercial service by Alstom in Italy, the introduction of the first regional train for the STA represents a significant upgrade in the connection between South Tyrol in Italy and Tyrol in Austria, and a further step forward for the national mobility system,” said Michele Viale, General Manager of Alstom Italy, during the launch ceremony. “These new trains not only enhance regional services, they also improve cross-border connections, offering maximum comfort and ensuring full accessibility for all passengers,” Viale added.
Statements from South Tyrol
“Today, for the first time, a Coradia Stream electric multiplex train can be seen on South Tyrol soil. From mid-2026, these multiplex trains will not only be in use in the Vinschgau Valley, but also throughout the state,” said Daniel Alfreider, Provincial Councilor for Mobility in the Autonomous Region of Bolzano-South Tyrol. “The new multiplex electric trains have around 3.000 kilowatts of continuous power on the wheels and reach a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour. The train offers 381 seats and thus carries up to 200 percent more passengers per trip than the previous trains. There is also an expanded bicycle compartment,” Alfreider said, referring to the technical features of the new trains.
Community Responsive Design and Full Accessibility
The interiors of the new Coradia Stream trains have been designed with a modern and user-friendly approach. The large spaces reserved for bicycle transport will provide great convenience, especially for cycling enthusiasts in the region. The comfort and accessibility of passengers with reduced mobility were also a priority during the design process. Numerous wide doors allow for fast and trouble-free boarding and disembarkation, while special areas accessible via adjustable ramps have the capacity for two wheelchairs with electric sockets. In addition, two on-board toilets, one of which is PRM (persons with reduced mobility) compatible, guarantee autonomy and comfort throughout the journey.
Will be in Service in 2026
Following successful completion of verification and certification tests, the new regional Coradia Stream trains are scheduled to enter commercial service in 2026. With the entry into service of this modern fleet, passengers between South Tyrol and Tyrol will enjoy a more comfortable, faster and more environmentally friendly travel experience.
Savigliano Plant: Center of Innovation
Alstom’s Savigliano site stands out as a centre of excellence for both its single-deck Coradia Stream regional trains (more than 600 sold in Italy alone to date) and its Avelia high-speed trains (more than 500 sold worldwide). An exemplary representative of Industry 4.0 as a result of major investments in digitalisation and automation in recent years, the site features a 3D virtual reality room where trains are developed in collaboration with other centres of excellence and key suppliers, and a TrainLab simulation environment that replicates the electrical and functional systems of real trains. This allows solutions and performances to be validated at an early stage before they are put into full-scale production.
