Fight Against Brown Skunk Nightmare Begins in Sakarya

Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality started to introduce the pheromone trap named 'tutSAK' to farmers in Sakarya, which it introduced to Sakarya and Türkiye on May 14 Farmers' Day.

Proceeding according to the planned training and distribution calendar, the Agricultural Services Department teams visit each neighborhood, distribute the product to farmers free of charge, and explain the correct method of use and the points to be considered in full detail.

Theoretical training is provided
Farmers are briefed on the use of 'tutSAK', which was obtained by SAU scientists by synthesizing thousands of substances and is interpreted as the only salvation for farmers.

“It is important that it does not harm nature”
Şecaat Cemal Çelik, who stated that the brown skunk invader will end with a total fight, said, “The University and the Metropolitan Municipality carried out a special study and came up with the project. They held an awareness meeting for the fight. It is also very important that it is distributed free of charge. We were complaining that we throw it and our neighbors cannot. It was very nice that it was distributed collectively. It is very important that the pesticides are only effective against invasive species and do not harm nature. We had problems with skunks, hopefully a bountiful hazelnut harvest will be obtained in the coming years.”

We were given our medicines and informed.
Elmalı Neighborhood Headman Turan Sezer, who stated that 85 percent of his neighborhood is hazelnut producer, said, “Skunks have increased a lot compared to last year. I would like to thank Sakarya University and the Metropolitan Municipality for their joint work. We are very happy. 85 percent of Elmalı Neighborhood is hazelnut producer. Our President Yusuf sent his team and gave us theoretical training. We were given our medicine, we were informed, God willing, our neighborhood and city will be saved from this trouble.”

“It poses a serious obstacle for us”
Hatice Acar also talked about its negative impact on daily life as well as agricultural production, and said, “The skunk plague has surrounded us everywhere. It not only reduces our quality of life, but also poses a serious obstacle to our agricultural activities. We hope that the medicines provided to us by our Metropolitan Municipality will be a solution to this problem. God willing, we will destroy this pest together.”

“First time in Sakarya”
Remzi Sezer, who stated that they will benefit from the training, said: “The skunk causes serious damage to our agricultural products and fruits, especially hazelnuts. The fact that this pest was first implemented in Sakarya in Türkiye is a concrete indicator of the value given to farmers. We thank our Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Mr. Yusuf Alemdar, for providing us with the medicines to be used in this fight free of charge.”

The value given to the farmer…
Stating that the project implemented by the Metropolitan Municipality is a value given to farmers, Necmiye Aydın said, “Our balconies are overflowing with this invasive species, our products are seriously damaged. It is time to find a solution to this problem. That is why we came here; we will try the medicine we have. Hopefully it will be beneficial for both our products and us. I wish everyone the best.”

The Metropolitan Municipality's agricultural units will continue to visit the city's neighborhoods to distribute TUTSAK and provide technical information to farmers.
