Bridge Widening Work in Tarsus Eases Traffic

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Road Construction Maintenance and Repair Department teams continue bridge construction and expansion activities in order to accelerate and secure traffic flow on critical routes. Metropolitan Municipality teams carried out expansion work on the bridge located on the DSI canal next to the Tarsus central Kırklarsırtı Neighborhood Mukhtar's Office Building, at the intersection of Ömer Nazmi Street and Veysel Çavuş Street.

The bridge, which was previously narrow and disrupted traffic flow and caused accidents, was demolished and made 15 meters wide. The new bridge, which also considered pedestrian safety and pavement work, was put into service. In the area where accidents occur due to congestion, especially during morning commutes and evening rush hours, the construction of the new bridge has made traffic flow safer.

Eroğlu: “With the work done, we offered a safer bridge to the citizens”

Fethi Eroğlu, who works as a Surveying Engineer at the Road Construction Maintenance and Repair Department, noted that the traffic flow has accelerated considerably with the expansion of the bridge, and said, “We renewed all of the asphalt on the bridge and its bones. We also provided a safer and more secure bridge to citizens by installing sidewalks, special needs individual crossings and guardrails for pedestrian use.” Drawing attention to the fact that Kırklarsırtı and Akşemsettin Neighborhoods are the neighborhoods with the highest population density in Tarsus, Eroğlu said, “Traffic is especially heavy here in the morning and during rush hour. We have also reduced the traffic density with our bridge, whose width has been increased to 15 meters, now having 2 departures and 2 arrivals.”

Mukhtar Cülük: “There were many accidents because the bridge was narrow”

Kırklarsırtı Neighborhood Headman Mehmet Cülük stated that the bridge in question has also become good in terms of pedestrian safety, and said, “There were many accidents due to the narrowness of the bridge. Since our citizens had difficulty crossing and children going to school were in danger while crossing, the Metropolitan Municipality decided to build a new bridge here. I would like to thank our President Vahap and all our friends who contributed.”

The new state of the bridge has pleased the people of Tarsus

Remzi Ergezer, one of the residents of the neighborhood, who stated that the old bridge posed a danger in terms of traffic safety due to its narrowness, said, “I have been living in this neighborhood since the Kırklarsırtı neighborhood was founded. The newly built bridge was narrow before and there were accidents all the time. This needed to be addressed. This service was granted to Mayor Vahap. I thank him.”

Şemsettin Bulşan, a tradesman in Kırklarsırtı, also noted that he was very pleased with the widening of the bridge, saying, “Our President Vahap has done great services to Tarsus. He is especially doing permanent work. He is building roads that will not deteriorate for 50 years. The bridge that was built was very narrow before and caused accidents. I hope that accidents will not occur and lives will not be lost from now on.”
