Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has completed a significant milestone towards achieving its sustainability goals by installing a photovoltaic panel system at its factory in Ciudad Sahagún, Mexico, the world’s third largest manufacturing facility. With this green initiative, Alstom reaffirms its commitment to decarbonize its operations and achieve zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.
Alstom Mexico General Manager Emphasizes Green Mobility
“The new Sahagún photovoltaic panel center represents a significant milestone for our Mexico operations and for Alstom’s commitment to building a more sustainable and competitive future for our industry. Our priority is to achieve truly green mobility,” said Maite Ramos, General Manager of Alstom Mexico. Ramos’s words clearly demonstrate that environmental approaches are at the core of Alstom’s sustainability strategy.
Targeted Annual Energy Production of 1.220 MWh
The photovoltaic panels recently installed at the Sahagún site will have an annual energy production capacity of approximately 1.220 MWh. This corresponds to 16,8% of the site’s total annual energy consumption. The 15.000 photovoltaic panels, spread over an area of more than 1.080 m², will provide an efficient and sustainable alternative to rising electricity costs and energy market volatility. This project is the first installation of photovoltaic panels at Alstom’s sites in the Americas.
Part of the Global Green Energy Transformation
This important project is part of a comprehensive program aimed at converting as many of Alstom’s global sites as possible to green energy sources. To date, the company has installed photovoltaic panel systems at 12 sites worldwide, with more planned for the future. This strategic initiative is a key pillar of Alstom’s ambitious goal to reduce direct and indirect CO2 emissions at its sites by 2021% compared to the 2022/40 financial year.
Power Purchase Agreement with Iberdrola
The project was implemented within the framework of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Spanish energy company Iberdrola. According to this agreement, Iberdrola will operate the system for 20 years and Alstom will directly consume the clean energy produced. This environmentally friendly energy produced is expected to reduce CO0,43 emissions by 2 tons per MWh. This collaboration will play a key role in Alstom’s sustainability goals.
The Importance of Alstom in Sahagún
Alstom’s massive 500.000 m² facility in Ciudad Sahagún, Hidalgo, is the largest production center in the Americas and the third largest in the world. This strategic facility has produced more than 4.000 metro and light rail vehicles and 2.000 diesel and electric locomotives for the country’s three largest cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. The Sahagún facility is also responsible for the production of Tren Maya, a major project of the Mexican federal government.
In addition to producing more than 70% of the rolling stock in Mexico, the Sahagún facility also performs subassembly and major assembly operations for trains operating in major metropolises around the world, including New York, Long Island, Edmonton, Toronto, Beijing, Minneapolis, Kuala Lumpur, Riyadh and San Francisco. This clearly demonstrates the critical role of the facility in the global rail industry. The investment in photovoltaic panels at this important Alstom facility is a concrete demonstration that the company places its sustainability vision at the heart of its production processes.
