CAF Delivered First Civity Nordic Train to Sweden

CAF has delivered the first Civity Nordic train, which was built to contribute to Sweden’s transport infrastructure, to Sweden for testing. The train has arrived at the Nesjö depot from Beasain, Spain. It will undergo an extensive 2026 kilometre test before its launch in 20.000, during which experts will assess its performance on Sweden’s national railway network.

Train Features and Testing Process

Civity Nordic trains have been modified to adapt to the harsh Scandinavian conditions. Able to operate in temperatures between -40 and +40 °C, the train promises a speed of 200 km/h on electric power and 140 km/h on biodiesel. CAF ensures that this train is both environmentally friendly and highly efficient.

Another train unit is currently being tested at the VUZ test track in the Czech Republic, while another unit is undergoing reliability tests in the climate chamber in Vienna. These tests aim to measure the trains’ resistance to temperature fluctuations and how they perform in long-term use.

2021 Contract and Delivery Plans

CAF has signed a contract with AB Transitio in Sweden for 2021 electric trains and 20 hybrid units in 8. These trains will operate in four Swedish regions and are recorded as a total order of $270 million. The electric trains will be delivered first, followed by biodiesel and electric hybrid units.

The first deliveries will be the priority, especially because the electric trains need to be delivered quickly. After the electric trains, the hybrid units will be delivered one by one and integrated into the Swedish railway system.

Civity Nordic: Innovative and Eco-Friendly Transportation

The new trains aim to provide passengers with comfort and reliability in difficult weather conditions. Experts say integrating the trains into the Swedish transport system will significantly improve the country’s rail transport. Tests in the Czech Republic and Vienna are critical to verifying the trains’ resistance to various climatic conditions.

The new trains meet environmentally friendly standards and the use of biodiesel is expected to reduce carbon emissions. These trains will not only provide service to the four regions of Sweden, but will also provide an environmentally friendly transport solution.

Civity Nordic: The Future of Swedish Railways

CAF continues to produce the remaining trains in Beasain and deliveries are on schedule. These trains will modernise the railway fleet in four regions of Sweden, making the transport system more efficient. Electric trains will be an important step towards sustainability and hybrid units will add flexibility.

Cross-condition tests will prove that the trains can overcome any challenges they may face and that they are reliable. With this project, CAF is reinforcing its reputation as a reliable supplier of rolling stock.

The launch in 2026 will be a major milestone for Sweden’s railways, with passengers enjoying fast, green and efficient transport options.
