Chilean State Railways (EFE) is launching a modern era on the critical 88-kilometer Talca-Constitución line, connecting the central region of Maule to the Pacific coast. Expected to significantly improve the quality of regional transport, the Prosper VLT railbus was unveiled at a ceremony.
A $15 million contract was signed with Brazilian rolling stock manufacturer Marcopolo for this important supply. The contract is part of a comprehensive program launched in January 2023 to modernize Chile’s rail infrastructure. The Talca-Constitución line plays a vital role in Chile’s transportation system, both as a daily commute for local residents and as a popular tourist route.
New Generation Comfort and Capacity
The Prosper VLT railbus stands out with its modern design and comfort. Each unit, consisting of two carriages, has a total capacity of 80 passengers, 220 of whom are seated. In order to improve the travel experience, the railbuses also feature air conditioning, USB charging ports for mobile devices and modern toilets. Thanks to its dual driving cabin, the railbus can easily move in both directions, providing operational flexibility. The new railbuses meet today's modern railway standards and have been specially designed to provide a regular and reliable service on this line with its challenging geography.
Tests and Training Continue
The last Prosper VLT unit supplied under the project is expected to arrive in Chile in May 2025. In the lead up to this date, a series of comprehensive tests and staff training sessions will be carried out on the new rail buses that will serve the line. This process is crucial for a safe and smooth start of service.
Flights Begin in September 2025
According to plans, regular passenger services with Prosper VLT rail buses on the Talca-Constitución line are expected to begin in September 2025. After completion of testing processes and the necessary training of personnel, the new trains will offer locals and visitors a modern and comfortable transportation alternative.
The Prosper VLT will replace the old MAN Ferrostaal units that have been in service since 1962 and were declared national technical heritage in 2007. However, these historically important vehicles were no longer able to meet modern transport needs due to their age. This change is seen as an important step for the future of regional transport.
The project also includes the construction of a new modern depot in the city of Talca. This investment will enable more efficient maintenance of the new rail buses and will contribute to the continuous operation of the vehicles. With the implementation of the new rail system, reliable and comfortable connections between the central regions of Chile and the coastal areas will be strengthened, significantly improving the region’s transport infrastructure.
