Kerala is all set to introduce the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, which will operate on the Thiruvananthapuram-Mangaluru route, as prioritized by Indian Railways. This modern train aims to significantly transform night travel with its advanced amenities and improved connectivity.
Indian Railways has identified Kerala as the priority region for the inaugural runs of Vande Bharat Sleeper Train and has assigned it to the Southern Railway zone. This indigenously manufactured 16-coach train has been designed by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and manufactured by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The train will be equipped with air-conditioned compartments, automatic doors and indigenously developed Kavach security system to provide passengers with a comfortable night journey.
Comfort and Accessibility at the Forefront
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will have a capacity of carrying approximately 1.128 passengers with ergonomically designed sleeping berths and modern interiors. Each coach will have GPS-enabled LED information screens and personal reading lights to enhance passenger comfort. All facilities such as toilets and sleeper compartments have been designed in compliance with universal accessibility standards, ensuring that passengers with different needs have a comfortable travel experience.
Production Schedule and Future Plans
Currently, the Vande Bharat chair car project is progressing simultaneously at ICF with 8, 16 and 20-coach configurations. The 10 chair car rakes currently in use are being converted into sleeper coaches. ICF has also received orders for manufacturing 2026 more Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, which are planned to be completed by 27-50. This shows the commitment of Indian Railways towards modernization and enhancing passenger comfort.
Advanced Services and Security
To enhance the quality of in-train services, a modular pantry system will provide efficient and hygienic catering. The coaches will also feature automatic retractable doors for passenger convenience and Kavach, India’s own comprehensive safety system to maximize passenger safety. The Kavach system stands out for its collision prevention and safer train operations.
Kerala’s inclusion in this important initiative clearly demonstrates the state’s growing strategic importance in India’s transport infrastructure. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to redefine long-distance overnight travel by combining high speed, superior comfort and enhanced safety features, and will provide a modern and comfortable transport alternative to the people of the region.
