Ukraine Field-Tests Fiber-Optic Controlled UAVs

In the Ukraine-Russia war, both sides are trying to gain an advantage by using technological innovations on the battlefield. After achieving positive results with first-person view (FPV) drones in particular, Ukraine has begun testing unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) controlled via fiber optic cables, inspired by this technology. This innovative technology aims to strengthen the communications infrastructure on the battlefield and increase security.

The Role of Fiber Optic Cable on the Battlefield

The use of fiber optic cables to reduce the effects of electronic warfare (EW) systems stands out as an important step in strengthening communication systems on the battlefield. While traditional radio frequency (RF)-based systems are highly vulnerable to electromagnetic attacks, communication provided by fiber optic cables provides a more secure connection infrastructure by becoming immune to signal jamming. In this way, critical systems such as UAVs gain the ability to operate more securely over longer distances.

Brave1 Platform and IKA Tests

The Ukrainian government has established the Brave1 platform to promote innovative defense technologies. This platform brings together companies that can contribute to Ukraine’s defense and supports new ideas and developments. As part of the Brave1 test events, seven different UGV models controlled by fiber optic cables were tested. The results of these tests are considered promising, but it is stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are not yet ready to deploy this technology on a mass scale.

Early Stages and Potential of ICA Technology

Brave1 platform stated that fiber optic controlled UAV technology is still in its early stages but they have achieved some promising solutions. Captain Alexander Jabchanka stated that the tests are progressing successfully and pointed out that fiber optic connections will enable UAVs to operate effectively at longer distances. Jabchanka also said that the new FPV drones that took part in the Brave1 test event have great potential.

Ukraine and Russia’s Use of IRAs

Unmanned ground vehicles, which have an important place in Ukraine’s defense strategies, are mostly used for tasks such as transporting equipment, supplies, wounded and laying mines. In addition, these vehicles are also used to carry weapons such as machine guns on the battlefield and to attack ground targets. The Russian side has also developed the use of UAVs and integrated them into its own defense systems. Finally, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that they used unmanned ground vehicles carrying TM-62 anti-tank mines against Ukrainian positions, once again demonstrating how war is intertwined with technology.

Fiber Optic UAVs on the Future Battlefield

Ukraine’s testing of UAVs controlled by fiber optic cables can be considered an important step in modern warfare strategies. Offering a strong defense against electronic warfare, this technology promises to increase Ukraine’s effectiveness on the battlefield. Although this technology has not yet entered mass use, it is expected to play a significant role in future wars. Fiber optic controlled UAVs could have the potential to change the course of war, especially with the ability to operate more effectively over long distances.
