US's Longest Streetcars Begin Testing in Maryland

Tests of the new generation vehicles, described as the longest trams in the United States, have begun in the state of Maryland. According to the statement made by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT MTA), dynamic trials of eight tram units, each consisting of five sections and measuring 43,3 meters in length, are being carried out on a special test track in Glenarden.

Technical Superiority and Project Details

These huge trams have a total capacity of 80 passengers, each with 430 seats. With these features, they will be able to carry many more passengers at the same time compared to the current trams. These modern vehicles, which are being tested, are part of the new 26,1-kilometer light rail line “Purple Line” project, which will connect the suburbs of the capital. This new line will be an important link in the metropolitan transportation network and will significantly facilitate travel between the suburbs.
