Triple Runway Operation Begins Tomorrow at Istanbul Airport

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that a historic step has been taken in air traffic management at Istanbul Airport. With the “Simultaneous Triple Independent Runway Operation” that will start at 17:10.00 on Thursday, April XNUMX (tomorrow), Istanbul Airport will be the first airport in Europe to implement this system.

Three Planes Will Be Able to Land or Take Off at the Same Time

Minister Uraloğlu stated that thanks to this new system, three aircraft will be able to land or take off at Istanbul Airport at the same time, completely independently of each other. This development will significantly increase the capacity of the airport and accelerate the flow of air traffic.

A First in Europe, an Example in the World

Uraloğlu emphasized the importance of this system by saying, “With the Triple Independent Runway Operation, Istanbul Airport’s traffic flow will accelerate and its dynamic capacity will increase. The Triple Independent Runway Operation is being implemented in the United States. Istanbul Airport will be the first airport in Europe to start the triple runway operation.”

Preparations Started in 2022, Training Completed

Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that the preparations for the project started in the last quarter of 2022, announced that detailed studies were carried out in cooperation with Eurocontrol, State Airports Authority, General Directorate of Civil Aviation and Turkish Airlines in 2023 and 2024. He said that all necessary preparations were completed in line with the safety analysis report prepared by Eurocontrol after risk analyses, safety studies and simulations. He stated that a new airspace design was made, control systems were made suitable for triple operations, airline companies were informed and air traffic controllers were trained with domestic and national simulators.

Advanced Technology and Automatic Structures

Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that the technology supporting the triple runway operations is highly developed and complex, said, “The system includes advanced radars, sensitive navigation aids and strong air traffic control protocols. All these components ensure that simultaneous operations are carried out safely and that air and ground traffic continue uninterrupted. The system also includes automatic structures that help predict flight routes and flows, and plays an important role in preventing runway incursions and smooth traffic management.” This system will start a new era in air traffic management at Istanbul Airport, providing great convenience for both passengers and airlines.
