Traffic Warning System and Rumble Strip Will Reduce Accidents

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the rumble strip application aims to prevent accidents where drivers go off the road due to absent-mindedness, drowsiness or distraction. Uraloğlu also stated that drivers are warned and informed about traffic accidents, weather, road conditions and environmental conditions with the Traffic Warning Signaling System, which is a part of the Intelligent Transportation System.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu made a statement regarding the work carried out by the General Directorate of Highways (KGM) to ensure traffic safety throughout the country.

Minister Uraloğlu stated that all data is collected and road users are informed instantly thanks to the Smart Transportation Systems Centers within the KGM and devices such as meteorological sensors, variable message signs and cameras placed at certain points.

“We Determine the Effects of Possible Accident Variables with Meteorological Information Stations”

Uraloğlu explained that thanks to the meteorological information stations, cameras and event detection applications, which are components of Intelligent Transportation Systems, they instantly detect the effects of variables such as weather events, environmental conditions and possible accidents, and continued as follows:

“Signaling systems provide instant information to all drivers about road conditions with variable message signs, radio broadcasts and mobile information applications. In this context, we made 810 intersections operational with traffic warning signal management last year. This year, 120 more intersections will be made with traffic warning. While we maximize safety on the roads with smart transportation systems, we will also prevent unnecessary time and financial losses.”

70 More Intersections Aimed to Be Converted to Traffic Adaptive Signaling Management

Minister Uraloğlu stated that within the scope of the works on transforming the fixed-time signaling systems into the traffic warning signaling management system, work was carried out at a total of 44 intersections, 235 of which were renovations and 279 of which were new facilities, last year, and noted the following:

“As part of the work, a total of 103 intersections were converted to traffic adaptive signaling management. This year, as part of the work to convert intersections to traffic adaptive signaling management, it is planned to convert 70 intersections to traffic adaptive and to install 200 synchronized IUGCs (Flashers) that can be accessed and managed remotely for foggy areas. The installation of 17 Variable Message Signs and 10 Meteorological Information Stations in various regions is also among our goals.”

Rumble Strips Improve Driving Safety

Uraloğlu explained that the rumble strip application aims to prevent drivers from going off the road due to absent-mindedness, drowsiness or distraction, especially on long journeys, and continued his words as follows:

“The vibration and sound created when the vehicle tires pass over the rumble strip warns the driver and gives them the opportunity to steer their vehicle back into the correct lane. This application is an effective measure in reducing accidents caused by going off the road. It also warns drivers to be careful by making them realize that they are approaching unexpected road and traffic conditions. Especially during night driving and in weather conditions where visibility is limited, rumble strips become an important support element that increases driving safety. Thanks to these strips that warn the driver with vibration, we aim to prevent driving off the road due to distraction.”

“We are planning to implement rumble strips on a 2025-kilometer section in 725.”

Minister Uraloğlu, who stated that the rumble strip application has been expanded on divided roads under the responsibility of the General Directorate of Highways, said, “We continue this application to reduce accidents that occur especially on the shoulder and on the side of the road. Since 2016, rumble strip application has been applied on 6 kilometers of road section. We plan to apply rumble strip application on 126 kilometers of section in 2025.”
