Izmir Metropolitan Municipality continues to popularize the Smart Traffic Management System (ATYS), which it implemented in order to make urban traffic more fluid. At the 479 intersection Thanks to this implemented system, traffic density is significantly reduced. The Metropolitan Municipality aims to integrate this smart system into all intersections in the future.
Strengthening the transportation infrastructure with intersection arrangements, underpass and overpass investments, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality keeps the intersections under control with ATYS for a smooth traffic. 479 of 412 adaptive intersections, is effectively managed via remote access from Izmir Transportation Center (IZUM). Also via cameras in the field 168 signalized intersections, is monitored 7 hours a day, 24 days a week. In this way, traffic flow can be monitored instantly and necessary interventions can be made.

Expressing that the Smart Traffic Management System is actively providing service throughout Izmir, Deputy Director of the Transportation Department Özgür Yalçınkaya said, “We have 609 intersections operated by our municipality throughout Izmir. 479 of these are included in the smart traffic system and we have remote access to 412 of them. We operate and run these intersections in our city 7/24. With a dynamic system, the green light duration is automatically adjusted by the intersection control device according to the traffic density and the instantaneous load at the intersection, preventing unnecessary waiting. When pedestrians press the button at the intersection, the green light turns on. In the upcoming period, we will also turn our intersections in other parts of the city into smart intersections.”
Solution to Traffic Congestion with Instant Intervention
There is instant connection to remote access smart intersections from the IZUM service building 7/24. Thanks to the cameras positioned in the field, 168 signalized intersections can be monitored live. Traffic congestion at intersections and main arteries is regularly intervened in line with the instant information received from the field traffic teams, who are in constant communication through the traffic police officers working in the control room in the IZUM service building. With these measures taken, intense efforts are made to return traffic flow to normal as soon as possible. At intersections with remote access, traffic flow is eased by giving instant green light periods to the direction where traffic congestion is experienced as much as desired. Thanks to this smart system, Izmir traffic is gaining a more controlled and fluid structure.
