Panic Over Suspicious Bags in Front of Hellenic Train Center in Athens

A suspicious bag exploded in front of the headquarters of the railway company Hellenic Train in Athens, the capital of Greece. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the explosion.

According to information reported by Greek state television ERT, an unidentified person or persons called a Greek newspaper and a website at around 20.35:35 local time, reporting that an explosion would occur in approximately 40-XNUMX minutes at the Hellenic Train headquarters in Athens.

Following the report, a suspicious bag in the area exploded with a loud noise during the specified time. Immediately following the incident, police teams were dispatched to the area and took extensive security measures in the area. Police evacuated the people in the building and the surrounding area and launched a detailed investigation. According to initial reports, no one was killed or injured as a result of the explosion.

This incident comes at a time when deep sorrow and anger over the 2023 Tempi rail disaster, one of Greece’s worst rail disasters, is still fresh. In that tragic accident, 57 people were killed and dozens injured when a freight train and an oncoming passenger train collided on the same track.

Criticism of the government's handling of the tragic accident had increased, especially with the end of the public holiday and the resumption of university classes. With the approach of the second anniversary of the disaster, which caused the deaths of many people, mostly young university students, this explosion, which comes at a time when public sensitivity is even higher, has increased concerns. A comprehensive investigation into the incident by police teams is ongoing. The cause of the explosion and the culprits behind it have not yet been determined.
