Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) continues its important investments in school gyms in order to contribute to the development of young people, who are the guarantee of the future, as healthy and well-equipped individuals. While the construction of new gyms in 15 schools throughout Istanbul continues at full speed, comprehensive maintenance and repair work has been initiated in the 40 school gyms determined in the first stage.
The school gyms, which are affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Services Department Sports Facilities Branch Directorate, have become worn out over time due to the intensive use of students. In order to eliminate this wear and tear and provide students with more modern and safe sports areas, a comprehensive maintenance and repair campaign was launched. Within the scope of the works that started last month, the exterior and interior paintings of the school gyms are being renewed, their roofs are being repaired, their floors are being changed in accordance with modern standards, the tribune seats are being revised, wet areas (toilets and showers) are being completely renewed and the lighting and ventilation systems are being brought into line with today's technology.
Regular Sports Opportunity for More Than 230 Thousand Students
As a concrete indicator of the importance that IMM gives to education and youth, more than 35 thousand students have the opportunity to take physical education classes in healthy and modern environments in 2022 school gyms, 220 of which were opened in 230 alone. Outside of school hours, these gyms host IMM's free sports schools. In these sports schools, children and young people receive sports training from expert trainers in many different branches, from athletics to volleyball, from gymnastics to badminton. In this way, young people in Istanbul are introduced to the unifying and developing power of sports and are supported in adopting a healthy lifestyle.
All School Gyms Will Be Covered
Following the successful completion of the renovation process in the 40 school gyms that was initially launched, IMM’s maintenance and repair works will be gradually implemented in all 220 school gyms across Istanbul. IMM states that it will continue its efforts with great determination to ensure that all children and young people in Istanbul have equal, healthy and high-quality sports areas. This investment will not only improve existing gyms, but will also further strengthen Istanbul’s sports infrastructure by completing 15 new gyms that are currently under construction and offering them to the service of young people. IMM’s visionary approach will make significant contributions to the physical and social development of young generations and will bring Istanbul one step closer to its identity as a sports city.
