Škoda Group has announced that it will deliver a total of 40 ForCity Smart 45T trams to the city of Brno in the Czech Republic. These new trams aim to modernize Brno’s public transport infrastructure and improve transport services in the city. City transport operator DPMB took delivery of the first tram on March 26, 2025, marking the first step in transport improvements in Brno.
Tram Fleet Modernization and New Orders
The agreement between Škoda Group and DPMB began with a contract signed in November 2023 for 15 trams. This contract is worth around $45 million and aims to provide the city with more modern and efficient transport solutions. In addition, with a new order placed in July 2024, DPMB purchased an additional 60 trams for $20 million. These additional orders will accelerate the modernization of Brno’s tram fleet.
ForCity Smart 45T Trams: Innovative Design and Comfort
The ForCity Smart 45T trams are designed to replace Brno’s older Tatra KT8D5 and T6A5 models. These modern three-section trams have a low-floor structure, allowing passengers to board easily and offer a comfortable ride with air conditioning. Each tram is 31 metres long and 2,5 metres wide, and can carry 233 passengers. 64 of this capacity are provided as seating areas, while the rest are reserved for standing or private areas.
The trams also have USB ports, information screens and special areas for bicycles, baby strollers, etc. to ensure passengers can travel comfortably. There are also suitable areas for disabled passengers.
Timeline and Plans
DPMB will begin test drives with the first tram in April 2025, after which the trams will start carrying passengers. All 40 trams are planned to be in service by the end of 2026. The project aims to renew Brno’s transport network and improve the quality of public transport in the city.
EU Support and Environmentally Friendly Transportation
The purchase of new trams is actively supported by the European Union. By financially contributing to such infrastructure projects, the EU aims to strengthen regional transport networks and promote environmentally friendly transport. The ForCity Smart 45T trams from the Škoda Group offer not only comfort but also environmentally friendly transport solutions. With this project, Brno is strengthening its place among modern European cities and increasing the sustainability of its transport infrastructure.
A New Era in Brno's Transportation
With these new trams, Brno aims to transform its transport infrastructure, providing its residents with more reliable, faster and more comfortable travel options. These innovative projects will consolidate Brno’s place among modern cities in Europe and will significantly improve the quality of transport services in the city.
