Scientific Support for Historical Heritage from ABB and Çankaya Municipality

Hosted by the Academic Thought Institute Association, with the significant contributions of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) and Çankaya Municipality, with the aim of disseminating scientific research on Türkiye's rich historical and cultural heritage. “II. Türkiye’s Historical and Cultural Heritage Symposium from Göbeklitepe to Today” was organized.

“Cultural Heritage Management” The symposium, held under the main theme of “Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage”, brought together researchers with authorities in the field of cultural heritage protection and management, paving the way for the emergence of new approaches in this field. Through presentations and sessions, participants shared their knowledge and experiences on cultural heritage management.

Ankara Heritage Studies Presentation from ABB

The symposium also discussed the works of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality regarding cultural heritage. Project Coordinator of the Department of Cultural and Natural Assets Bekir Odemis, 'Ankara Heritage Studies and Cultural Heritage Management in Municipalities: Ankara Example' Ödemiş shared with the participants the projects and management approach of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality regarding the protection of the historical and cultural heritage of the Capital and transferring it to future generations.

Wide Participation in the Symposium

Important names such as Kastamonu Former Governor Dr. Enis Yeter, ABB Cultural and Natural Heritage Department Project Coordinator Bekir Ödemiş, AKK Deputy Chairman Prof. Dr. Savaş Zafer Şahin, Cultural Heritage Protection Branch Manager Sinem Battaloğlu and Ministry of Culture and Tourism Fight Against Smuggling Abroad Branch Manager Burcu Özdemir also attended the symposium, which attracted great interest from academics and guests from various universities and different professions.

Local Governments' Awareness of Cultural Heritage Protection Emphasized

In the sessions held under the theme of “Cultural Heritage Management”, responsibilities and authorities in the protection and management of cultural heritage were discussed. Bekir Ödemiş, ABB Cultural and Natural Assets Department Project Coordinator, drew attention to the increasing awareness of local governments in protecting cultural heritage in his speech. Ödemiş said, “In the old law, Law No. 1580, municipalities did not have the authority and responsibility to protect cultural heritage. Later, with the law accepted in 2005, it began to be considered within the authority and responsibility of municipalities. The establishment of the Historical Cities Union and the development of this awareness in local governments with this legal regulation led to unexpected successes in Türkiye,” and emphasized the importance of the active role of local governments in this field.
