PKP Intercity, one of Poland’s largest railway operators, aims to expand its passenger rail fleet by 2030. The company aims to provide better service by increasing the number of rail cars from 1900 to 2200. In addition, PKP Intercity’s fleet of electric trains will double to 2025 by 86. This expansion is seen as an important step for the company in modernising its transport infrastructure and meeting the growing demand for rail travel in Poland.
New Trains and Upgraded Wagons
The new rolling stock to join PKP Intercity’s fleet will include electric trains manufactured by Newag and double-decker models that will soon enter service. The company will also receive wagons pulled by locomotives manufactured by FPS H. Cegielski. These new vehicles aim to increase passenger capacity and improve travel comfort.
Speaking in Warsaw, the company's chairman, Janusz Malinowski, said demand for rail travel was growing and was a driving force driving the company into the future. However, he stressed that despite this expansion, even PKP Intercity's targets may not fully meet passenger demand.
European Union Support and $550 Million Grant
PKP Intercity has received significant financial support from the European Union to accelerate the modernization of its fleet. Under an agreement signed with the EU Transport Projects Centre last November, the company received a grant of $550 million. These funds will be used to upgrade 56 zero-emission locomotives and 248 passenger carriages. The company aims to complete these projects by mid-2026. On-time completion will strengthen PKP Intercity’s position in the transport market.
Environmentally Friendly and Comfortable Transportation
The demand for environmentally friendly and comfortable trains in Poland is growing rapidly every year. PKP Intercity aims to meet these demands by adopting modern technology and providing sustainable transport solutions. One of the company's goals is to increase the safety and comfort of passengers and at the same time reduce environmental impact.
Contribution to Poland's Railway Infrastructure
The fleet renewal process is a critical step not only for PKP Intercity but also for the development of Poland’s railway infrastructure. The new trains and modernised carriages will support the country’s green initiatives by increasing regional connections. Electric trains manufactured by Newag have already started being delivered to PKP Intercity this year, with double-decker models and locomotive-hauled carriages to follow in future deliveries.
A Strong Position in Europe's Rail Market
The investments made by PKP Intercity in line with its goals will reinforce the company’s dominance in the European rail transport market. While passengers have positively assessed the improvements the company has made in recent years, management is aware that they need to continue investing in order to be fully successful. EU grants and cooperation with manufacturers are among the factors that ensure the success of these major projects.
