Moscow to Switch to Biometric Payment System in Public Transport

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on his Telegram channel on Saturday that biometric payments will be available at all metro turnstiles and ground public transport by 2025.

Sergei Sobyanin said that plans for 2025-2026 include the introduction of biometric payment for travel at all stations of the MCD-1, MCD-2, MCD-3 and MCD-4 aboveground rail lines, as a result of which about 1 million passengers per day on the lines will be able to use this payment method.

At Moscow metro stations, biometric payment method was introduced in the fall of 2021. Today, this method can be used to pay for travel on the Moscow Central Circle, regular river transport and Aeroexpress. More than one million 100 thousand turnstiles are connected to the system.

According to the mayor, “More than 400 thousand people use biometric payment, more than 160 thousand trips are made on weekdays and the number of passengers using this easiest way to pay for travel continues to increase.”
