Poland’s national railway carrier PKP Intercity has taken an important step in its aim to increase passenger comfort and accessibility. The company’s modernized Red Arrows trains have started operating on the popular tourist routes Krakow — Beskidy and Sudety. These new trains aim to provide passengers with a much more modern and comfortable travel experience, replacing the old-fashioned trains previously used on these lines.
Modern Comfort and Comprehensive Accessibility Opportunities
The 1996 series (DM 1998) trains, manufactured by the Dutch company Talbot between 3400 and 90, were purchased by operator SKPL Cargo in 2000 and underwent a comprehensive modernization process, after which they were added to the fleet of PKP Intercity. The renewed Red Arrows trains are equipped with a number of modern features that will make passengers' journeys more enjoyable. The trains feature air conditioning, electrical outlets at each seat, foldable personal tables and ergonomic, soft seats. There are also areas and services designed specifically for passengers with limited mobility, as well as ease of access. While first and second class cabin options meet different comfort expectations, special transportation areas have also been considered for bicycle enthusiasts. The route of these lines passes through the picturesque mountainous regions of Poland, connecting small towns and villages, which turns the journey into a visual feast.
Network Expands with New Routes and Hybrid Trains
PKP Intercity’s modernization efforts are not limited to the Beskidy and Sudety routes. In summer 2025, the modernized Red Arrows trains are also planned to start operating on the Krakow – Hrubieszow line. This new line will significantly simplify the transportation of residents of important towns such as Zamość, Biłgoraj, Tarnobrzeg to Krakow. In line with the company’s strategy of expanding its route network to small settlements on mixed railway lines, it has also ordered hybrid trains with combined drives from Newag for operation in 2025. These hybrid trains will be able to operate with both electric and diesel engines, allowing for more flexible use of the railway network.
Contribution to Tourism and Regional Connections
The introduction of modernized trains will not only improve the quality of transportation for local people, but will also contribute significantly to the tourism potential of Malopolska Voivodeship. Comfortable and accessible travel opportunities are expected to increase tourists’ interest in mountainous regions and boost the regional economy. The renewed railway lines will become an indispensable part of the region’s tourism map, while new trains will also strengthen social and economic ties between large cities like Krakow and remote villages.
Vision of Continuous Improvement and Environmentally Friendly Transportation
PKP Intercity continues its mission to continuously improve its transport network and expand regional access. The company’s priorities include improving the quality of service and making its rolling stock suitable for the modern age. Positive feedback from passengers shows their satisfaction with the modern design and amenities offered by the modernized trains. For this reason, Red Arrows trains are becoming an increasingly popular option for scenic route trips. With the introduction of hybrid trains in 2025, PKP Intercity’s market position will be further strengthened and the company will move steadily towards its goal of promoting environmentally friendly transport in all regions. The modernization of rolling stock is a successful example of how trains can be given new life and functionality through efficient use of existing resources. This approach offers a sustainable way to improve the quality of travel while maintaining high standards. PKP Intercity continues its work with the vision of creating a fully accessible transport network throughout Poland, and with new routes and modern trains, it is increasingly strengthening the connections between cities and rural areas.
