
Minister of the Interior Ali Yerlikaya made important statements by drawing attention to the high rate of motorcycles in urban traffic accidents. Minister Yerlikaya sadly reported that according to the latest data, 52,3 percent of urban traffic accidents, or one in every two accidents, involved motorcycles. This high rate once again revealed the importance of the behavior of motorcycle drivers and other vehicle drivers in traffic.
Motorcycle Inspections Increased: Hundreds of Thousands of Transactions Conducted
Minister Yerlikaya also announced that traffic teams have increased their inspections of motorcycles and drivers. He stated that in the approximately three and a half month period between January 1 and April 10, 2025, traffic teams carried out a total of 650 procedures regarding motorcycles and drivers. This figure demonstrates the importance given to motorcycle safety and the effectiveness of inspections. However, despite the procedures carried out, the high rate of motorcycle accidents indicates the need for more comprehensive measures.
Thousands Casualties in Motorcycle Accidents: Call for More Caution
Minister Yerlikaya also shared the painful toll of motorcycle accidents. Announcing that 2024 of our citizens unfortunately lost their lives in traffic accidents involving motorcycle-type vehicles in 584, Yerlikaya underlined that everyone should be more sensitive and careful in the face of this sad picture. In order to reduce losses, it is of great importance for both motorcycle drivers and other vehicle drivers to pay utmost attention to traffic rules.
Important Warnings to Other Drivers: Be Aware of Motorcyclists
Minister Yerlikaya particularly emphasized that motorcycle drivers have equal rights with other vehicle drivers in traffic and made important warnings to other drivers. Yerlikaya drew attention to the fact that motorcycles coming from the opposite direction may not be noticed at intersections and turns and called for careful assessment of motorcycle speeds and distances before making turns. It was stated that sudden maneuvers should be avoided, motorcycles should definitely be checked from the side mirror before opening the vehicle door, and close follow-ups and disturbing behaviors towards motorcycle drivers should be avoided. It was also reminded that motorcycle drivers are at serious risk in adverse weather conditions such as rain, wind, fog and at night, and it was requested that people be more careful and understanding in these conditions.
General Traffic Controls Continue: Strict Monitoring of Flashing Light Usage
Minister Yerlikaya announced that not only motorcycle-related but also general traffic inspections continue uninterruptedly. He announced that 3 million 10 thousand 2025 vehicles were inspected by the Police and Gendarmerie Traffic Teams between April 3-652, 339. During these inspections, legal action was taken against 31 drivers who used light or audible warning signs (flashing) that were installed on vehicles and used without permission in the legislation. In addition, it was stated that legal action was taken against a total of 166 thousand 960 vehicles and drivers who committed various violations, including 28 thousand 697 speeding violations, 30 thousand 290 without periodic inspections, 13 thousand 960 not using seat belts, 6 thousand 971 driving vehicles without a driver's license, and 497 thousand 591 without compulsory financial liability insurance. This data shows that inspections are continuing with determination to ensure traffic safety.
