Italy Launches Modernization Project for Bolzano-Merano Railway

Italy’s railway operators RFI and Italferr are developing comprehensive plans to modernise the South Tyrol railway between Bolzano and Merano. The project includes a new line and stations, which will significantly increase the railway’s capacity in the region. A critical meeting on March 31 reviewed construction calculations with project stakeholders, and experts emphasised that the initiative will bring significant benefits in terms of passenger traffic, safety and reliability.

Project Goals and Timeline

The technical feasibility study for the modernization project is set to be completed in the first half of 2025. This process provides a comprehensive preparation period to ensure the project meets regional goals. In a survey conducted in the summer of 2023, 79% of respondents indicated that they strongly supported adding a second track to the region. Then, in February 2025, local business leaders and officials overwhelmingly approved the proposal.

Capacity Increase of South Tyrol Railway

The modernization of this historic line will see the hourly train frequency increase from two to four pairs. In addition, travel time will be reduced from 38 minutes to just 26 minutes. These improvements are an important step to meet the demand for public transport in the region and to support sustainable tourism growth. The connection to Merano will be strengthened, providing more efficient travel options for both tourists and residents.

Local Support and Economic Benefit

Local leaders strongly support the project. This modernization will not only improve infrastructure, but will also bring economic benefits. The second line will reduce current congestion, allowing more trains to run to meet increasing demand.

Security and Technological Innovation

RFI and Italferr are prioritizing safety on the project, integrating advanced technologies. This will ensure the railway meets modern safety standards and provide residents with faster, safer travel options. Additionally, construction timelines will be coordinated with local authorities securing funding and permits.

A New Era in Regional Transportation

Analysts say the Bolzano-Merano line upgrade is a critical step for the region’s transport infrastructure. It will not only boost tourism but also improve commuting efficiency. With strong public support and clear benefits, South Tyrol’s railway modernization will reach a major milestone by 2025.
